সহজেই উত্তেজিত, স্নায়বিক শিশুদের রোগা স্নায়বিক রোগীদের পক্ষে উপযুক্ত। অতিরিক্ত স্নায়বিক অনুভূতি প্রবল। সকালে সমস্ত শরীরে বাহ্যিক আড়ষ্টতা ও দুর্বলতা। স্নায়বিয়, পিত্তপ্রধান ধাতুগ্রস্ত ব্যক্তি। রোগা, চর্মসার স্ত্রীলোক। হিস্টিরিয়াগ্রস্ত ব্যক্তির ক্ষেত্রে উপযুক্ত অথবা যারা মেরুদণ্ডের অস্বস্তিতে কষ্ট পায়, তৎসহ আক্ষেপিক কাশি, ঢেকুর প্রভৃতি থাকে তাদের ক্ষেত্রে উপযোগী। এছাড়াও যে সকল রোগী অতিরিক্ত বয়েসের জন্য দুর্বল অথবা অতিরিক্ত পরিশ্রমের জন্য, যারা রক্তাল্পতা ও নিদ্রাহীনতায় কষ্ট পায় তাদের ক্ষেত্রে এই ঔষধ উপযোগী। বয়ষ্কদের জন্য এটি একটি শ্রেষ্ঠ ঔষধ, যখন শরীরের সর্বপ্রকার শারীরিক কাজ শিথিল হয়ে আসে, দুর্বলতা, শীতবোধ এবং আড়ষ্টতা বিশেষতঃ দেহের একাংশের, আঙ্গুলের, বাহুর প্রভৃতিতে দেখা দেয়। শরীরের একাঙ্গীন উপসর্গে এই ঔষধ ব্যবহার হয়ে থাকে। সঙ্গীতে এই ঔষধের লক্ষণের বৃদ্ধি হয়। মুক্ত বাতাসে হাঁটাচলা করার পর শরীরের ভিতর স্পন্দন অনুভূত হয়। একাঙ্গীন উপসর্গ।

মন – লোক দেখলে ভয়, এবং একা থাকতে চায়। অন্যের উপস্থিতি কোন কিছুই সহ্য করতে পারে না। ভীষন লাজুক, খুব সহজেই মুখ চোখ লাল হয়ে যায়। গান শুনলে কান্না পায়। হতাশ, জীবনে বিতৃষ্ণা। মোহময় ভ্রান্তি। জীবনের প্রতি ভালোবাসা নষ্ট হয়ে যাওয়া। অস্থির উত্তেজিত অতিরিক্ত কথা বলে। সময় খুব ধীরে যায়। বৃদ্ধ ব্যক্তিদের পক্ষে সকালের দিকে চিন্তা করতে কষ্ট হয়। অসুখকর বিষয় সম্পর্কে মনের ভিতর তোলপাড় হওয়া।

মাথা — কেন কিছু বুঝতে দেরি হয়। মাথা ঘোরা তৎসহ মাথায় ও পাকস্থলীর দুর্বলতা। মাথার সামনের দিকে চাপবোধ তৎসহ মানসিক অবসাদ। মস্তিষ্কের উপরের অর্ধাংশে ছিঁড়ে ফেলার ন্যায় যন্ত্রণা। বার্ধক্যজনিত কারণে মাথা ঘোরা। যখন গান শুনে তখন মস্তিষ্কে দ্রুত রক্ত চলাচল করে। শ্রবনশক্তি কমে যায়। নাক দিয়ে রক্তস্রাব বিশেষতঃ সকালে। দাঁত দিয়ে প্রচুর রক্তপাত। চুল পড়ে যায়।

পাকস্থলী – ঢেকুর, তৎসহ মারাত্মক, আক্ষেপিক কাশি। অম্ল যুক্ত ঢেকুর, অনেকটা গলা বুক জ্বালা করার ন্যায়। মধ্যরাত্রির পর পাকস্থলী ও উদরের স্ফীতি। উদরের শীতল অনুভূতি।

প্রস্রাব – একই সময়ে গুহ্যদ্বারে ও প্রস্রাব থলিতে যন্ত্রণা। গুহ্যদ্বার ও প্রস্রাব নলীর ছিদ্রে জ্বালাকর অনুভূতি, মূত্রনালীর ভিতর এরূপ অনুভূতি হয় যেন মনে হয় কয়েক ফোঁটা প্রস্রাব বেরিয়ে গেল। প্রস্রাব করার সময় মূত্ৰনলীতে চুলকানি ও জ্বালা। প্রস্রাব ঘোলাটে এমন কি প্রস্রাব করার সময়েও, বাদামি রঙের তলানি পড়ে।

স্ত্রীরোগ – কামোন্মত্ততা। স্ত্রী যৌনাঙ্গে চুলকানি, ব্যথা ও স্ফীতি। ঋতুস্রাব নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের বহু পূর্বে। প্রচুর নীলচে রঙের প্রদরস্রাব। রাত্রে বৃদ্ধি। সামান্য চোট লাগলেই, দুই. ঋতুকালের মধ্যবর্তী সময়ে রক্তস্রাব হয়ে থাকে।

পুরুষের রোগ – কামোন্মত্ততাসহ অন্ডকোষে তীব্র চুলকানি। অঙ্গটি বাইরের দিকে অসাড়, ভিতরের অংশে জ্বলন। কামোন্মত্ততা সূচক অনুভূতি মারাত্মক ভাবে লিঙ্গোদ্রেক।

শ্বাস-প্রশ্বাস – হাঁপানির মত শ্বাস-প্রশ্বাস তৎসহ গ্যাল ঢেকুর উঠে। স্নায়বিক, আক্ষেপিক কাশি, তৎসহ স্বরভঙ্গ ও ঢেকুর, সকালে ঘুম থেকে উঠার পর, অন্যের উপস্থিতিতে বৃদ্ধি। শ্বাসনালী, গলা ও কণ্ঠনালীতে সুড়সুড় করে, বুকের ভিতর চাপবোধ, কাশির সময় শ্বাস-প্রশ্বাস বন্ধ হয়ে আসে। কাশি আক্ষেপিক,   কুকুরের ডাকের মত, বুকের গভীর থেকে উঠে আসে। শ্লেষ্মা বার করার সময় শ্বাস বন্ধ হয়ে আসে।

হৃদপিণ্ড – হৃদকম্প, তৎসহ বুকের ভিতর চাপবোধ, যেন মনে হয় বুকের ভিতর একটি পিণ্ডের মত কিছু রয়েছে অথবা বুকের ভিতর কিছু আটকিয়ে থাকার ন্যায় অনুভূতি। নাড়ীস্পন্দন অনুভব করা যায়। মুক্ত বাতাসে হৃদকম্প, তৎসহ মুখমণ্ডল ফ্যাকাশে।

ঘুম – চিন্তার জন্য কিছুতেই ঘুমাতে পারে না, বাধ্য হয় বিছানা ছেড়ে উঠে পড়তে হয়। উদ্বেগযুক্ত স্বপ্ন। ঘুমের সময় শরীর ঠাণ্ডা ও অঙ্গ-প্রত্যঙ্গের পেশীর নর্তন।

চামড়া – চুলকানি ও টাটানি, বিশেষতঃ যৌনাঙ্গে। চামড়ার আড়ষ্টতা। বাহুদুটির নিস্তেজ ভাব। যেন ঘুমিয়ে গেছে।

অঙ্গ-প্রত্যঙ্গ – হাতে ও আঙ্গুলে খিল ধরা কোন কিছু চেপে ধরার সময় বৃদ্ধি। পায়ে, খিল ধরা।

কমা বাড়া — বৃদ্ধি, গানে, অপরিচিত লোকের উপস্থিতিতে, যে কোন প্রকার অস্বাভাবিক জিনিষ থেকে, সকালে গরম ঘরে।

উপশম – মুক্তবাতাসে ধীরে হাঁটাচলা করলে, যন্ত্রণার দিক চেপে শুলে, ঠাণ্ডা। পানীয়ের ব্যবহারে।

সম্বন্ধ – মস্কাস, এই ঔষধের পর প্রায়ই বেশ ভালোভাবে খাটে।

তুলনীয় – ওলিয়াম সাকসিনান (হিক্কা), সামবুল, ক্যাষ্টর, এসাফ, ক্রোকা, লিলিয়াম।

শক্তি — ২য় এবং ৩য় শক্তি, বারে বারে দেওয়া যেতে পারে, বারে বারে দিলে ভালো ফল পাওয়া যায়।

এই ঔষধটিকে মোটামুটিভাবে দেখিলে মনে হইবে যে, তুমি একটি অকাল বৃদ্ধের বিশেষ লক্ষণগুলি পড়িতেছ। তুমি সচরাচর দেখিবে যে, একজন আশী বৎসরের বৃদ্ধের যেরূপ লক্ষণ থাকা উচিত, তাহাই হয়ত একটি পঞ্চাশ বৎসর বয়স্ক লোকের উপস্থিত হইয়াছে; এবং এই ঔষধটি পড়িবার পর তোমার মনে হইবে যে, সেই মূর্তিটিকেই, সেই অকালবৃদ্ধ লোকটিকেই তোমার সম্মুখে উপস্থিত করা হইয়াছে। আমরা কম্পন ও এক প্রকার বিশেষ দুর্বলতাকে জানি যাহা বার্ধক্যজ স্নায়বিকতা ভিন্ন অন্য কোন কথা দ্বারাই প্রকাশ করা যায় না। ইহা কোন রোগের জন্য মানসিক বিশৃঙ্খলা নহে, কিন্তু একটি বিশেষ অবস্থা, যাহা বৃদ্ধগণের মধ্যে জীবনের শেষ প্রান্তে লক্ষ্য করা যায়। কম্পন এবং টলমলভাব এবং মনের স্বপ্নময় অবস্থার সহিত ভুলো ভাব। সে এক বিষয় হইতে বিষয়ান্তরে চলিয়া যায়, একটি প্রশ্ন করে, কিন্তু ঐ প্রশ্নটির উত্তর পাইবার জন্য অপেক্ষা না করিয়া আর একটি প্রশ্ন করিয়া বসে। সুতরাং সে এক বিষয় হইতে আর এক বিষয়ে লাফাইয়া যায়। ইহাকে মনের গোলযোগ বলা চলে না, ইহা মনের স্বপ্নময় অবস্থা, বার্ধক্যজনিত চপলতা। যুবকদিগের যখন এইরূপ অবস্থা দেখা যায়, তখন এই ঔষধটি উপযোগী; ইহা তাহার মানসিক বিকৃতি নহে, মানসিক দুর্বলতা। যে-সকল লোক ক্ষণিক ও দ্রুত পরিবর্তনশীল কৌতুহল প্রকাশ করে, এক বিষয়ের কথা বলিতে আর এক বিষয়ের অবতারণা করে, এই ঔষধটি বিশেষভাবে তাহাদের পক্ষে উপযোগী। কখন কখন কোন রোগী আমাকে একটির পর একটি প্রশ্ন করিয়া যায়, প্রথম প্রশ্নটির উত্তর পাইবার জন্য অপেক্ষা করে , দ্রুত আমি তাহার প্রশ্নগুলির উত্তর দিই নাই, এরূপ রোগী পাইলে আমি মনে মনে বলি ইহার এম্ব্রা গ্রিসিয়া প্রয়োজন। আধুনিক সমাজের স্ত্রীলোকদিগের মধ্যে এইরূপ মানসিক অবস্থা এত অধিক খামখেয়ালী বক্তা, সে যেন বুঝিতেই পারে না যে, যে, তোমরা তাহা লক্ষ্য করিলে বিস্মিত হইবে। আধুনিক সমাজের একজন সুন্দরী, যিনি তাহার আত্মমর্যাদা রক্ষার জন্য নিজের মোজার গোড়ালিটি পর্যন্ত রিপু করিতে পারেন না, তিনি হয়ত কয়েক বৎসরের মধ্যে ঠিক এই অবস্থায় পৌঁছিবেন এবং তখন এম্ব্রাও তাঁহাকে আরোগ্য করিতে পারিবে না। কিন্তু এই সকল লক্ষণ দ্বারা প্রকাশিত এক প্রকার স্নায়বিক রোগ আছে, তাহা এম্ব্রা গ্রিসিয়া আরোগ্য করিবে। মানসিক অবসাদের সহিত মেজাজের প্রচন্ডতা পৰ্য্যায়ক্রমে আসে ইহা একটি বিশেষ লক্ষণ। ইহা স্বভাবতঃ বৃদ্ধদিগেরই দেখা যায়। কিছুক্ষণ প্রচন্ড উত্তেজনার পর অনেক সময়েই অবসাদ, সমস্ত কিছুতে,—আনন্দে, দুঃখে, লোকজনের সম্বন্ধে ঔদাসীন্য আসে। যেরূপ ব্যাপারে একজন মানসিকভাবে সামঞ্জস্যযুক্ত লোকের হৃদয় ভাঙ্গিয়া দেয়, সে তাহা অগ্রাহ্য করে। এইসব অদ্ভুত ব্যাপারে কেন সে উত্তেজনা বোধ করিল না, তাহাও সে উপলব্ধি করে না,—তাহার উদাসীন ভাব এতই অধিক। অনেক লক্ষণই প্রাতঃকালে বাড়িয়া উঠে। সে মনের গোলমাল এবং মূঢ়তার সহিত এক প্রকার স্বপ্নময় অবস্থায় জাগিয়া উঠে এবং সন্ধ্যার দিকে তাহার উন্মাদ-লক্ষণ প্রকাশ পায় ।

বৃদ্ধ ব্যক্তিদের সচরাচর যে প্রকার সাদাসিদে ও অবর্ণনীয় শিয়োঘূর্ণন দেখা যায়; এম্ব্রা তাহার ঔষধগুলির একটি। তাঁহাদের এত মাথা ঘুরায় যে, তাহারা রাস্তায় বাহির হইতে পারেন। না, প্রাতে জাগিয়া উঠিলে এত মাথা ঘুরায় যে, কিছুক্ষণ অপেক্ষা না করিলে তাহারা দাঁড়াইয়া চলাফেরা করিতে পারেন না। এই শিরোঘূণন বাৰ্দ্ধক্যজনিত অথবা অকালবার্দ্ধক্যজনিত। তারপর, যখন এইরূপ লোক কোন বিষয়ে ভাবিতে আরম্ভ করেন, তাহার চিন্তাগুলি দ্রুত অন্তর্হিত হয়। ইহা চিন্তালোপসহ এক প্রকার মানসিক বিকার। তাহাকে কয়েক মিনিট ধরিয়া বিশেষ চেষ্টা করিয়া লুপ্ত চিন্তাগুলি স্বস্থানে ফিরাইয়া আনিয়া তবে কোন বিশেষ বিষয়ের চিন্তায় মনঃসংযোগ করিতে হয়। কিন্তু যখন তাহার মনঃসংযোগ করা কঠিন হয়, তখন সে বসিয়া থাকে, কতকগুলি অপ্রীতিকর ব্যাপার তাহার মনের মধ্যে উদিত হয় এবং সে সেইগুলি চিন্তা করিতে বাধ্য হয়, কোনরূপেই পরিত্রাণ পায় না। ইহা কতকটা ‘নেট্রাম মিউর’ সদৃশ, কিন্তু ‘নেট্রাম মিউরে’র বিশেষত্ব এই যে সে (স্ত্রী) কতকগুলি অপ্রীতিকর অতীত ঘটনার সম্বন্ধে চিন্তা করিয়া আনন্দ পায় এবং সেইগুলি সম্বন্ধে চিন্তা করিতে করিতে রাত্রে জাগিয়া থাকে। এম্ব্রা গ্রিসিয়া এইরূপ বিষয় সম্বন্ধে আলোচনা করিতে বাধ্য হয়। নানাপ্রকার মূর্তি, অলীক মুখ, বীভৎস কল্পনা তাহাকে উত্ত্যক্ত করে এবং জাগাইয়া রাখে। অর্ধ-স্বপ্নময় অবস্থায় তাহার মনের সম্মুখে এইসব মুখভঙ্গী ভাসিতে থাকে। এইরূপ অবস্থায় বৈষয়িক গোলযোগ হইত আসিতে পারে, তৎসহ শিরোঘূর্ণন, মস্তিষ্কে রক্তসঞ্চয় এবং মস্তিষ্কের ক্লান্তি থাকে।

এই ঔষধের আর একটি সৰ্ব্বাঙ্গীণ লক্ষণ এই যে, অপর লোকের উপস্থিতিতে লক্ষণগুলি বাড়িয়া উঠে, অন্যের সহিত কথোপকথন করিলেও সুস্পষ্টভাবে বাড়িয়া উঠে। স্ত্রীলোক, ধাত্রী কাছে থাকিলে, তাহাকে অন্য ঘরে না পাঠাইয়া মলত্যাগ করিতে পারে না। একাকী না থাকিলে, অত্যন্ত বেগ দেওয়া সত্ত্বেও তাহার মলত্যাগ হয় না। নেট্রাম মিউর’ সম্বন্ধে বলা হয় যে, রোগী অপর লোকের সামনে মূত্রত্যাগ করিতে পারে না। আশপাশে কেহ থাকিলে মূত্র নির্গত হয় না। উহা এই ঔষধটিরও একটি বিশেষ লক্ষণ। অপর লোকের উপস্থিতিতে মানসিক গোলমাল ও অস্বাচ্ছন্দ্যবোধ। বন্ধুদিগের মধ্যে থাকিলে অস্বস্তিবোধ। যেই সে পাঁচজনের মধ্যে যায় অমনি তাহার রক্তোচ্ছ্বাস, কম্পন, স্নায়বিক উত্তেজনা দেখা দেয়; এবং চিন্তাগুলি অদৃশ্য হয়। এই সকল লক্ষণের সহিত রোগী মনে করে যে, তাহার মন শূন্য হইয়া গিয়াছে এবং অবশেষে সে বিষাদ, দুঃখ এবং নৈরাশ্যের মধ্যে নামিয়া আসে এবং তাহার আর বাঁচিতে ইচ্ছা হয় না। তাহার জীবনে বিতৃষ্ণা জন্মে এবং সে মরিতে চায়। “অত্যন্ত বিষাদ” “বিষাদ ভাব বহুদিন পর্যন্ত তাহাকে কাঁদাইতে থাকে।” অকালবৃদ্ধ, ভগ্নস্বাস্থ্য রোগীর এইরূপ মানসিক অবস্থা হয়। ইহা একটি জরাজীর্ণ রোগীর ছবি এবং এখন প্রশ্ন হইল যে, যে রোগী এরূপ দেখায় ও এরূপ ব্যবহার করে, তাহাকে তুমি আরোগ্য করার মত সময় থাকিতে পাইয়াছে কিনা। তুমি অনায়াসে বুঝিবে যে, তুমি তোমার সম্মুখে এমন একটি লোককে পাইয়াছ যে, পাহাড় হইতে পড়িতেছে এবং একবার এক প্রকারের, পরক্ষণেই আর এক প্রকারের উন্মত্ততায় আক্রান্ত হইতেছে। চিকিৎসক যখন এম্ব্রা গ্রিসিয়া রোগীর এই স্নায়বিক মানসিক অবস্থা, স্পন্দন, কম্পন এবং উত্তেজনা দেখেন, কিন্তু এই লোকটিই পূৰ্বে সবল ও বলিষ্ঠ ছিল, তখন তিনি সম্পূর্ণ স্বাস্থ্যভঙ্গের পূর্বসূচনা বুঝিতে পারেন। কোন ব্যবসা সংক্রান্ত অথবা পারিবারিক আঘাত লোকটির উপরে আসিয়া পড়িয়াছে। যখন ক্ষয়রোগ আসিতে থাকে, তখন তুমি এরূপ অবস্থা দেখিতে পাইবে না, তুমি এরূপ ধাতুবিকৃতি অবস্থা দেখিতে পাইবে না, কিন্তু দেখিতে পাইবে স্নায়ুমন্ডলীর অবসন্নতা, মানসিক অবসন্নতা। কোন ব্যক্তি পরিবারের মধ্যে একজনের পর আর একজনের মৃত্যুর আঘাত পাইয়াছে, মনে হইয়াছে, যেন আর কিছুই থাকিল না। সে এই আঘাতকে দার্শনিক মনোভাব লইয়া দেখিতে পারে নাই; অথবা সে হয়তো তাহার ব্যবসা হারাইয়াছে, বন্ধুগণকে হারাইয়াছে; এবং তারপর মনের এক স্বপ্নময় অবস্থায় আসিয়া পড়িয়াছে এবং সে ভাবিতেছে—এ জীবন রাখার উপযুক্ত কিনা। এইখানেই তোমরা এম্ব্রা গ্রিসিয়ার চিত্র পাইলে।

কতকগুলি উপসর্গ প্রাতঃকালে উপস্থিত হয় এবং কতকগুলি আহারের পর দেখা দেয়। “মস্তক-শীর্ষে ভারবোধসহ শিরোঘূর্ণন, নিদ্রার পর বাড়ে”, বিশেষতঃ প্রাতঃকালে বাড়ে। একথা পাঠ্যপুস্তকে লিখিত হয় নাই, কিন্তু ইহা আহারের পরেও বাড়ে। “রোগীতে শিরোঘূর্ণন এবং পাকস্থলীতে দুর্বলতা বোধের জন্য শুইয়া পড়িতে হয়।”

স্নায়বিক লক্ষণগুলি পড়িলে, আমরা পাই ‘সঙ্গীত অসহ্য বোধ হয়।” সঙ্গীত শুনিয়া সে কপিতে থাকে, তাহার মানসিক লক্ষণের বৃদ্ধি হয় এবং তাহার পিঠে হাতুড়ি মারার ন্যায় যন্ত্রণা হয়। গান শুনিলে অনেকগুলি দৈহিক লক্ষণও প্রকাশ পায়। মনে হয়, যেন; গানের সুর একটা জড়পদার্থ, উহা তাহকে চাপিয়া ধরিতেছে।

উপসর্গগুলি অনেক সময়ে একাঙ্গিক হয়। শরীরের একপার্শ্বে ঘৰ্ম্ম অথবা আক্রান্ত পার্শ্বে ঘৰ্ম্ম। “মাথার ডানপার্শ্বে এমন একটি স্থান থাকে যে, সেখানকার চুল স্পর্শ করিলে ক্ষতবৎ বেদনা হয়।” ঐ একই অনুভূতি চৰ্ম্মেও থাকে, উহাতে অত্যন্ত স্পর্শকাতরতা। “প্রাতঃকালে জাগরিত হইলে মস্তকতুকে ক্ষতবৎ বেদনা, তারপর ঐ স্থানে অসাড়তা অনুভূত হয়। এই ঔষধের সমস্ত অবস্থার মধ্যেই “অসাড়তা” কথাটি দেখিতে পাইবে। তোমরা এক বিশেষ প্রকারের অসাড়তা দেখিতে পাইবে, যেরূপ বৃদ্ধ লোকদের মধ্যে দেখা যায়। অঙ্গগুলিতে হাসপ্রাপ্ত চেতনাশক্তি, ক্ষীণ রক্তসঞ্চালন।

তারপর, আমরা চক্ষু-লক্ষণের মধ্যে দেখিতে পাই—“দৃষ্টির অপরিচ্ছন্নতা, যেন সে কুয়াশার মধ্য দিয়া দেখিতেছে।” চক্ষুতে কোন হেতুনিৰ্দেশক রোগ না থাকা সত্ত্বেও, এই দৃষ্টির অপরিচ্ছন্নতা দেখা দেয়। ইহা স্নায়বিক দৃষ্টিশক্তির অপরিচ্ছন্নতা, বার্ধক্যজ পক্ষাঘাতিক অবস্থার সূচনা। চক্ষুর পাতায় চুলকানি, যেন একটি আঞ্জনি উৎপন্ন হইতেছে। সর্বাঙ্গেই চুলকানি উপস্থিত হয়; দেহের ক্ষুদ্র ক্ষুদ্র দ্বারে চুলকানি।

পাঠ্য-পুস্তকে উল্লেখ নাই, কিন্তু এই ঔষধের অধিকারভুক্ত নির্দিষ্ট লক্ষণ—“উভয় শঙ্খদেশ হইতে আরম্ভ করিয়া মাথায় ইতস্ততঃ সঞ্চরণশীলতা নিয়া ধরার মত এবং ছিন্নকর, চাপনবৎ শিরঃপীড়া।” “বেদনাটি মাথার ভিতর দিয়া তীরবৎ ছুটিয়া চলে, বর্শাবিদ্ধ করার মত; কাটিয়া ফেলার মত বেদনা, সঞ্চালনে বৃদ্ধি এবং শুইয়া থাকিলে উপশম। নাশিকা ঝাড়িলে শিরঃপীড়া। কপালের উন্নত স্থানে এবং চক্ষে চাপনবৎ বেদনা। দক্ষিণচক্ষু এবং চক্ষের পাতায় জ্বালা। ডান চক্ষুর ভিতরে এবং উপরে ছোট রেখার ন্যায় স্থানে ছিঁড়িয়া ফেলার ন্যায় বেদনা, বাম ভ্রূর উপর চাপবোধ; তীরবৎ বেদনা, আহারের পর বৃদ্ধি, অশ্রুপাত, এই সকল লক্ষণ মূল পরীক্ষায় আছে কিন্তু পাঠ্য-পুস্তকে নাই; এগুলিকে বাদ দেওয়া হইয়াছে “গাইডিং সিম্পটমস” পুস্তকখানির সৰ্ব্বত্রই এই ব্যাপার, বইখানি ছোট করার তাগিদে, প্রয়োজনীয় লক্ষণগুলি ছাড়িয়া যাওয়া হইয়াছে।

“শ্রবণশক্তি কমিয়া যায়।” কর্ণের কোন যান্ত্রিক রোগ ব্যতীত শ্রবণশক্তির ক্ষীণতা। তাহার শ্রবণশক্তি এতই বিকৃত হয় যে, সঙ্গীত তাহার লক্ষণগুলির বৃদ্ধি করে, শ্রবণ ইন্দ্রিয়ের স্নায়ুগুলির জন্যই এরূপ হয়। “গান শুনিলে মস্তকে রক্তসঞ্চয় হয়।” সঙ্গীতে তাহার কাশি বাড়ে। মনে কর, কোন ব্যক্তি কাশিতে আরম্ভ করিল; তাহার একমাত্র কারণ এই যে, সে সঙ্গীত শুনিতেছে! উহা কত আশ্চর্য ব্যাপার! ক্যাল্কেরিয়াতেও এরূপ অনুভূতি আছে, পিয়ানের বাদ্য স্থানে স্থানে, বিশেষতঃ কণ্ঠনলীতে যাতনার সৃষ্টি করে।

এই ঔষধে যথেষ্ট রক্তপাত আছে। প্রাতঃকালে নাসিকা হইতে প্রচুর রক্তস্রাব। এখানেও আমরা সেই প্রাতঃকালীন বৃদ্ধি-লক্ষণ পাইলাম। আমরা ক্ষীণ রক্তসঞ্চালনের কথা পাইলাম; কারণ, শ্লৈষ্মিক ঝিল্লী হইতে সহজেই রক্তক্ষরণ হইতেছে। “প্রাতঃকালে শায়িত অবস্থাতেই প্রচুর রক্তস্রাব।” “শুষ্ক রক্ত নাকে জড় হইয়া থাকে।” “নাসিকার দীর্ঘস্থায়ী শুষ্কতা, হাঁচি হইলে যেরূপ হয় তদ্রুপ উপদাহ।” “শ্লৈষ্মিক ঝিল্লীর ক্ষীণতাসহ নাকে পুরাতন শুষ্ক সর্দি।” নাসিকার অভ্যন্তর চকচকে এবং শুষ্ক।

তৃষ্ণা ব্যতীত মুখের শুষ্কতা। দুইবার গলাধঃকরণের মধ্যে গলায় দংশনবৎ ব্যথা। গলায় ক্ষতবৎ অনুভূতি। গল-লক্ষণগুলি প্রাতঃকালে বাড়ে। উপসর্গগুলি আহারের পর গরম কিছু পান করিলে, বিশেষতঃ গরম দুধ পান করিলে বাড়ে। “আহারের পর কাশি এবং কণ্ঠরোধভাব।” গলা সম্বন্ধে কতকগুলি লক্ষণের অদ্ভুত সমাবেশ আছে। গলায় শুষ্কতা এবং শ্লেষ্মা সঞ্চয়, সে উহা তুলিয়া ফেলিতে চেষ্টা করে, তখন তাহার কণ্ঠরোধ হয় এবং সময়ে সময়ে বমি করিয়া ফেলে। কাশি হইতে বমন। প্রত্যেকবার মলত্যাগের পর পাকস্থলী গহ্বরে দুর্বলতা। পাকস্থলীর অভ্যন্তরে কিছু নাই—এরূপ অনুভূতি। যকৃতের গভীর স্থানে চাপবোধ, প্রাতঃকালে বৃদ্ধি, আহারের পর বৃদ্ধি; মলত্যাগের পর বৃদ্ধি। প্রবল বায়ুসঞ্চয়সহ উদরস্ফীতি, বিশেষতঃ আহারের পর। কতকগুলি লক্ষণ পানীয় গ্রহণের পর বাড়ে। কখন কখন এই সব উপদ্রব মধ্যরাত্রিতে উপস্থিত হয় এবং অন্ত্রের মধ্যে কলকল শব্দ ও কাটিয়া ফেলার ন্যায় বেদনায় সে জাগিয়া উঠে। উদরটি ঠান্ডা, বোধ হয় যেন উদরের অভ্যন্তরস্থ সবকিছুই ঠান্ডা হইয়া গিয়াছে। অন্যান্য সময়ে ঠান্ডাভাবটি উদরের একপার্শ্বে অনুভূত হয়।

বৃদ্ধ ব্যক্তিদের অদম্য কোষ্ঠবদ্ধতা, বিশেষতঃ কেহ নিকটে থাকিলে মলত্যাগ করা অসম্ভব হইয়া পড়ে। “পুনঃ পুনঃ নিষ্ফল মলপ্রবৃত্তি, ইহাতে সে অত্যন্ত উদ্বিগ্ন হইয়া পড়ে; এই সময়ে কাহারও উপস্থিতি অসহ্য বোধ হয়। স্বাভাবিক মলত্যাগের পর, উদরে চাপ বোধ করে অথবা খালি খালি বোধ ও দুর্বলতা অনুভব করে; উহা বায়ুত্যাগ করিলে অথবা উদার উঠিলে উপশমপ্রাপ্ত হয়।

রক্তাক্ত মূত্র, মূত্রে লাল তলানি। মূত্রত্যাগকালে মূত্র ধোঁয়াটে, হরিদ্রাভ বাদামি বর্ণ; এবং উহার তলানি বাদামি বর্ণ। “টক গন্ধযুক্ত মূত্র।” মূত্র প্রচুর হয়। “মূত্রত্যাগকালে মূত্রনালীতে এবং যোনিপথে জ্বালা, খোচামারা ব্যথা; চুলকানি এবং সুড়সুড়ি।” উরুদ্বয়ের মধ্যস্থানে ক্ষতবৎ অনুভূতি।” “ইন্দ্রিয়সেবাজনিত অন্ডকোষে চুলকানি।” “প্রাতঃকালীন ভীষণ লিঙ্গোত্থান, কিন্তু কামপ্রবৃত্তি থাকে না, তৎসহ জননাঙ্গের অসাড়তা। ইগ্নেশিয়া’ ও ‘নেট্রাম মিউরে’র ন্যায় লক্ষণগুলি পরিভ্রমণশীল। সামগ্রিকভাবে লইলে তাহাদের সামঞ্জস্য বিধান সম্ভব, কিন্তু এককালে কয়েকটি লক্ষণ লইলে, উহাদিগকে আশ্চর্যরূপে বিরুদ্ধ বোধ হয়। ইহাকে বুঝিবার জন্য তোমাদিগকে সমগ্র ঔষধটিকে ধরিতে হইবে।

দুই ঋতুর মধ্যবর্তী কালে প্রচুর রক্তস্রাব। “প্রত্যেক সামান্য দুর্ঘটনায় দুই ঋতুর মধ্যবর্তী কালে রক্তস্রাব।” কঠিন মলত্যাগকালে বেগ দিলে, এমনকি একটু বেশী হাঁটিলে বা বেশী পরিশ্রম করিলে যোনি হইতে রক্তস্রাব। “ঋতুকালে বাম পা শিরাস্ফীতির জন্য সম্পূর্ণ নীল হইয়া যায়, তৎসহ পায়ে চাপনবৎ বেদনা।” “শয়নে জরায়ুর লক্ষণগুলি বর্ধিত হয়” ইহা এমন একটি লক্ষণ, যাহা আশা করা চলে না। ঋতুস্রাব নিয়মিত সময়ের পূৰ্ব্বে এবং প্রচুর। ঋতুস্রাব নিয়মিত কালের সাত দিন পূর্বে উপস্থিত হয়। এবং তারপর জননেন্দ্রিয়ে ভীষণ চুলকানি দেখা দেয়। ভগৌষ্ঠদ্বয়ে স্ফীতিযুক্ত ক্ষততাবোধ ও জ্বালা।

এইরূপ স্নায়বিক উত্তেজনা ও অবসাদ হইতে তোমরা এই ঔষধের আর একটি বিশিষ্ট লক্ষণ আশা করিতে পার;—উহা হৃৎপিন্ডের লক্ষণসহ শ্বাসকৃচ্ছ্রতা; কষ্টকর শ্বাস-প্রশ্বাস; এক বিশেষ প্রকারের হাঁপানি। উহা সামান্য পরিশ্রমে উপস্থিত হয় । সঙ্গমকাৰ্য্যের চেষ্টাতেই হাঁপানি। এ “কণ্ঠনলী এবং শ্বাসনলীতে চুলকানি; চাঁচিয়া ফেলার ন্যায় অনুভূতি; এবং ক্ষতবৎ বেদনা।” “গলা; কণ্ঠনলী এবং শ্বাসনলীতে সুড়সুড়িবোধ।” ঐ স্থানের সব কিছুই চুলকায় এবং ঐ চুলকানি প্রায়ই এক প্রকার পোকা হাঁটার ন্যায় অনুভূতি। দুৰ্বল; কম্পযুক্ত এবং শীর্ণ, “বৃদ্ধ ও শিশুদিগের হাঁপানি।” “আক্ষেপজনক কাশি।” “পুনঃ পুনঃ ঢেকুর ও স্বরভঙ্গযুক্ত প্রবল আক্ষেপিক কাশি।” এই কাশির অধিকাংশের উৎপত্তি স্নায়বিক কারণে। ইহা উত্তেজনা, স্নায়বিকতা ও কম্পনসংযুক্ত কাশি, ইহা দেখিয়া অভিজ্ঞ ব্যক্তি বিস্মিত হইয়া ভাবিবেন যে, রোগীর মস্তিষ্ক ও মেরুমজ্জার উপদ্রব আছে কি! স্নায়বিক কাশি, যেরূপটি মেরুদন্ডের উত্তেজনা থাকিলে দেখা যায়। কণ্ঠনলীর সঙ্কোচন হইতে কাশি, তৎপর প্রচুর সাদা শ্লেষ্মা উঠে। ইহা হুপিং কাশির ন্যায় থাকিয়া থাকিয়া উপস্থিত হওয়া কাশি। ইহা যে কোন প্রকার সামান্য শ্রমে সঙ্গীতে উত্তেজনায় হাঁপানির ন্যায় শ্বাসকৃচ্ছ্রতা।  মস্তকে রক্তসঞ্চয়সহ কাশি। চিন্তা এবং দুর্ভাবনা হইতে কাশি। এই লক্ষণসমূহ প্রকাশ পাইবার অল্পদিন মধ্যেই রোগী শীর্ণ ও শুষ্ক হইয়া পড়ে এবং অবশেষে তাহার চর্ম্ম শুষ্ক গো-মাংসের ন্যায়  দেখায়। অতঃপর সে হয় কম্পনশীল ও দুর্বল। সে বুকের বামদিকের গভীর স্থানে যথেষ্ট ছিন্নকর চাপের অভিযোগ করে। বুকের মধ্যে হাজার ন্যায় অনুভূতি এবং চুলকানি। যদি সে ঐ স্থানটি স্পর্শ করিয়া চুলকাইতে যায়, তাহা হইলে  চুলকানি ও সুড়সুড়ি একস্থান হইতে আর একস্থানে সরিয়া যায়। তোমরা এ কথায় নিশ্চিতই বিস্মিত হইবে না যে, এইরূপ রোগীর সামান্য মাত্র পরিশ্রমে, উত্তেজনায়, সঙ্গীতে কোন কিছুতেই মনঃসংযোগ করিতে গেলে হৃৎস্পন্দন উপস্থিত হয় এবং সেই সঙ্গে সে কাঁপিতে থাকে ও থরথর করিতে থাকে। এই স্পন্দন সে হাতে পায়েও লক্ষ্য করে ; তাহার সর্বাঙ্গ থরথর করে। তাহার হস্ত-পদাদি টিপটিপ করে। সে সর্বাঙ্গে তাহার ধমনীগুলিকে অনুভব করে এবং হৃদস্পন্দন  হইতে শ্বাসকষ্ট উপস্থিত হয়।

অঙ্গ-প্রত্যঙ্গগুলি সহজেই অসাড় হয়, সামান্য মাত্র চাপ পড়িলেও  ঐগুলি ঝিনঝিন করে, মুড়িয়া রাখিলেও ঝিনঝিন করে। হস্ত-পদাদির শীতলতা, কম্পন ও আড়ষ্টতা। হাতের আঙ্গুলের নখগুলি ভঙ্গপ্রবণ  ও কুঞ্চিত হইয়া উঠে। শুইয়া থাকিলে বাহুদ্বয় অসাড় হইয়া পড়ে। ঊরুদ্বয়ের মধ্যবর্ত্তী স্থানে এবং হাঁটুর পিছন দিকে ক্ষতবৎ এবং হাজাযুক্ত হয়। নিম্ম অঙ্গগুলি ভারি বোধ হয়, পক্ষাঘাতিক দুর্বলতা  উপস্থিত হয়, রোগী যেন বৃদ্ধ হইতে থাকে। বার্দ্ধক্যজ স্নায়বিকতা উপস্থিত হইতে থাকে। এই ঔষধ মধ্যবয়স্ক লোকের অকালবার্দ্ধক্য আরোগ্য করিয়াছে। ইহা ঝিনঝিন অসাড়তা এবং দুর্বল রক্তসঞ্চালন, তৎসহ পৈশিক শক্তির অভাবকে আরোগ্য করিয়াছে। যে-সকল শিশু উত্তেজনাপ্রবণ, স্নায়বিক ও দুর্বল, ইহা তাহাদের পক্ষে উপযোগী। ক্ষীণকায়  রোগীদের পক্ষে উপয়োগী। বৃদ্ধ ও শিশুদের  পক্ষে উপযোগী।

অপর নাম – এম্বারগ্রিস (Ambergris)

সম্ভবতঃ তিমি মৎস্যজাত, মোমের ন্যায় একপ্রকার পদার্থ সমুদ্রে ভাসমান অবস্থায় পাওয়া যায়। হোমিওপ্যাথিক ঔষধার্থে প্রথমে এর বিচুর্ণ প্রস্তুত হয়।

১। ঘন ঘন গ্যাসের বায়ুর ঢেকুরসই আক্ষেপিক কাশি।

২। অত্যন্ত স্নায়বীয় রমণী, ঘরের মধ্যে কেউ থাকলে মল মূত্রত্যাগ

করতে পারে না।

৩। দুই ঋতুর মধ্যবর্তীকালে রক্তস্রাব, সামান্য পরিশ্রমে, ভ্রমনে, অথবা মলত্যাগকালে বেগ দিলে উহার রক্তস্রাব হতে দেখা যায়।

৪। স্নায়বীয় কাশি ও তার পরে বায়ু উদগারে ইহা বিশেষভাবে উপযোগী।

৫। বৃদ্ধদের স্নায়বীয় রোগে এবং স্নায়ুর অবসন্নতা বিশিষ্ট ক্ষীণকায়

ব্যক্তিদের পক্ষে ইহা বিশেষ ভাবে উপযোগী।

বিঃ দ্রঃ – এখানে পাঁচটি তথাকথিত হিস্টিরিয়া রোগের ঔষধ সম্বন্ধে আলোচনা করা হয়েছে। এদের কতকগুলির একই রকম স্নায়বিক লক্ষণ আছে। আমি প্রত্যেকের কেবলমাত্র চরিত্রগত কয়েকটি লক্ষণ এখানে দিয়েছি। বাকী অংশ মেটেরিয়া মেডিকা থেকে পড়ে নিতে হবে।

Introduction
Probably a nosode or morbid product found in the belly of sperm whale. The best is that which whalers cut out, and which is usually to be had in Boston. Most of it is picked up in the Eastern Seas. Used by the Arabians and since. Introduced by Hahnemann in 1827; especially proved by his friend, the Count de Gersdorff, from whom are nearly one-third of the symptoms. The alcoholic tincture is the best preparation. The so-called oil of amber is oleum succinum, and was used by Holcombe in hiccough.

Mind
Memory impaired.

Comprehension slow, has to read everything three or four times, and then does not understand it.

Is not able to reflect upon anything properly, feels stupid.

Often indicated in old age.

Confusion of head; of occiput.

Difficult thinking in morning, old people.

Distorted images, grimaces; diabolical faces crowd upon his fancy.

Pressive drawing, ascending from nape of neck, and extending through head towards forehead, considerable oppression remaining in lower part of occiput.

Outer Head
Falling off of hair.

On r, side of head, a spot, where hair when touched pains, as if sore.

Scalp feels sore in morning, when awaking; this is followed by a sensation of numbness, extending over whole body.

Sight and Eyes
Dullness of vision, as if from looking through a mist.

Pressure and smarting in eyes, as from dust; lachrymation.

Pressure on eyes, which are difficult to open, and pain in eyes as if they had been closed too firmly, particularly in morning.

Itching on eyelid as if a stye was forming.

Hearing and Ears
Roaring and whistling in ears, in afternoon.

Deafness in one ear.

Crackling in left ear (like sound made when winding a watch).

Hearing decreases; with cold sensation in abdomen.

Violent tearing pain in and behind right auricle.

Tearing: in right ear.

Crawling, itching and tickling in ears.

Music aggravates cough.

Listening to music brings on congestion to head.

Smell and Nose
Dried blood gathered in nose.

Bleeding of nose early in morning.

Nosebleed with menses.

Long-continued dryness of nose, frequent irritation as from sneezing.

Upper Face
Paleness of face with headache.

Painful swelling of cheek on upper jaw, with throbbing in gums.

Drawing pain now in one and again in another tooth; agg. by warmth, momentarily removed by cold; not agg. by chewing, and passes off after a meal; at same time inner portion of gums was swollen.

Bleeding of gums.

Taste and Tongue
Bitter taste in mouth in morning on awaking.

Sour taste after drinking milk.

Folds under tongue pain as if sore, like small growths.

Ranula.

Inner Mouth
Foetor of mouth, agg. mornings. Whooping cough.

Blisters in mouth pain as if burnt.

Smarting and cracked painful condition of mouth.

Accumulation of water in mouth with cough.

Throat
Sensation of rawness in region of velum pendulum palata.

Rawness in throat with cough.

Tearing in palate, extending into left ear.

Dryness of throat in morning.

Sore feeling in throat during empty deglutition, and from outward pressure, not when swallowing food, with tension of glands of throat as if swollen.

Sore throat after exposure to a draft of air; stitching from throat into right ear; pains particularly from motion of tongue.

Tickling in throat, which induces coughing.

Tickling in throat and thyroid body, during act of coughing.

Accumulation of greyish phlegm in throat, which is difficult to hawk up, accompanied by rawness.

Hawking phlegm from fauces produces vomiting and choking.

Thirstlessness.

Eating and Drinking
After breakfast, nausea.

After eating: cough and gagging; anxiety; pressure in pit of stomach, as if food stuck and would not go down.

Aggravation from warm drinks, especially from warm milk.

Better after eating: toothache; oppression in chest; chill.

After drinking milk: sour taste; heartburn.

Hiccough, Belching, Nausea and Vomiting
Belching with and after cough.

Eructations either empty, sour or bitter.

Eructations with cough, so as almost to cause choking.

Belching removes pressure under scrobiculum.

Hiccough.

Heartburn: with abortive eructations; when walking in open air; from drinking milk.

Every evening, sensation as of disordered stomach and acrid risings up to larynx.

Stool and Rectum
First copious, soft, light brown stools, after a few days constipation.

Urinary Organs
Frequent micturition at night and in morning after rising.

Urine when emitted is clouded, yellowish brown and deposits a brownish sediment, after which urine looks clear and yellow; coffee grounds sediment.

Dropsy after scarlatina.

Sour smelling urine. Whooping cough.

Urinates three times as much as drink taken, especially in morning; followed by a dull pain in region of kidneys.

Sensation as if a few drops passed through urethra.

During urination, burning, smarting, itching and titillation in the urethra and vulva. Ovaritis.

Male Sexual Organs
A man, age 80, gets asthma when attempting coition.

Impotence.

Violent morning erections without desire, with numbness in parts.

Internal, strong, voluptuous sensation in genital organs.

Itching pimple over male genitals.

Sore rawness between thighs.

Voluptuous itching on scrotum. Following use of Staphys.

Female Sexual Organs
Nymphomania: often with discharge of bluish white mucus.

Burning in sexual parts, with discharge of a few drops of blood.

Stitches in ovarian region, when drawing in abdomen or pressing upon it.

Discharge of blood between periods, at every little accident, at every hard stool or after a walk a little longer than usual.

During menses, left leg becomes quite blue from distended varices, with pressive pain in leg.

Lying down aggravates uterine symptoms.

HOMOEOPATHY is practically unknown in Ireland, at any rate in the South East. It was quite by accident fifteen years ago I came across a booklet on simple homoeopathic chemists. Curiosity prompted me to try one or two of the remedies. They proved so successful that I took I tool up the study of homoeopathy, and have been adding to my stock of remedies ever since. I now have about three hundred different ones, some of which I would never care to be without, and all of which, I have doubt, are likely to be successful in suitable cases.

As nobody here knows anything about homoeopathy, and as an Irishman hates to be laughed at, I only use them for myself or my family, or, in exceptional cases, for friends. In the latter case, however, I only offer a remedy when I feel fairly certain of a speedy result, or when I am convinced that there is not possibility of their being cured by the means they are using. A few notes on some of the remedies that proved successful may be of interest.

Solanum tuberosum 3x cured a case of prolapsus and which failed to yield to several other remedies. Kali phos. 2x was a useful alternative remedy in this case.

Mercurius vivus 4 has often proved useful in sudden swelling of the face, soreness of the gums, gumboil and toothache.

Nux vomica 1x cured in couple of days a bad case of indigestion with acid eructations after every meal. The patient had previously consulted two different doctors, and tried a great many different remedies remedies recommended by them, but steadily continued to get worse.

Lachesis 5 cured a bad carbuncle over the right ear. The guiding symptom was that the eruption turned blue.

Stellaria media O cured a case of rheumatism where hard lumps were beginning to form over the finger joints.

Radium bromide 30 cured corns on each of the little toes. Taken at weekly intervals for two or three months it apparently had no effect, but shortly after it was discontinued, the corns disappeared, and never came back.

Ambra grisea 3x cured an obstinate case of choking cough, which used to come on suddenly, generally at meals, which suggest that it was caused by food going the wrong way, although such was not the case, as it frequently came at other times. The fits of suffocative coughing used to last for several minutes. “Globus hystericus” would probably be the technical name of this trouble.

A girl I knew fell down some steps, and injured or strained her back. I gave her Arnica O with no result, and then Hypericum 1x. After the first dose Hypericum the pains came on worse than ever which, she said, she knew was sign that the remedy was the right one. I told her to take the remedy once a day. Each time she took it the pains came on again, but less each time, and in five or six days she was completely cured, “thanks,” to your little snowballs.” Previous to this treatment an X-ray examination disclosed no serious injury, but long after she was discharged as “cured” by the regular doctors, she continued to complain of the pains in the small of her back.

Although homoeopathy has yet to be discovered in Ireland, many of the old people prefer herbs to doctors medicines. One man I met told me he was looking for a plant to cure a case of bleeding piles in friend, as an infusion of it had proved highly successful in other cases. I went with him to see what the plant was, as he did not know its name. It proved to be Yarrow, from which the homoeopathic remedy Millefolium is made.

“A cow cant elaborate milk without all the elements which normal milk demands. When deprived of these normal elements through a diet of commercial by-product feeding stuffs, the cows tissues, like the human tissues, like the human tissues, are actually called upon to surrender their own substance. Thus robbed, the animal becomes emaciated, and lowered resistance, due to impaired vitality, paves the way for tuberculosis.” ALFRED McCANN, The Science of Keeping Young.

A CASE STUDY

CASE:

Master Murtuza aged 3 years, a Muslim child residing in Singapore was brought to me on 27.2.86, C / o. Chronic constipation since infancy. The child was given a lot of allopathic purgatives since infancy for his ailment. At present he could pass his stools only after an enema. The stools were hard, dry, offensive, occasionally in form of round balls. Mucus was absent. The Child had to strain a lot during defaecation. The child preferred to pass stools, standing. Child also occasionally complained of epigastric pain and vomiting. He did not like anyone around while passing stools.

He was slim & tall for his age. A poor eater he had a strong dislike for solid foods and fruits. He liked cold drinks, aerated waters, lemons, pungent things, soups and salt. His thirst was as less as his appetite. A hot child, he was uncomfortable in the sun and preferred a cold bath.

The child was born Caesarean and breast fed till 6 mths. Supplementary feeds were started from 6 months onwards. The child disliked the bottle and had to be spoon-fed. The childs milestones were normal.

A playful, quiet and intelligent child, he was extremely apprehensive of being examined. That I presumed was due to the fact that the child had been seen by various doctors before being brought to me. According to the mother, the child used to get frightened easily. He was a light sleeper awakening every two hours before going back to sleep. There was no past history of any major illness.

Family history revealed that the mother had suffered from 2 miscarriages prior to the birth of the patient and had hypertension and urinary tract infection during her pregnancy. She had also suffered from meningitis and jaundice during her childhood. The paternal grandmother suffered from gout, while the maternal grandmother had hypertension, rheumatic pains and ischaemic heart disease. The maternal grandfather suffered from rheumatoid arthritis.

ON EXAMINATION:

T.R.P. (N)

Tongue: Clean & Moist.

Teeth: Upper incisors cupped.

P / A Soft – full of faecal lumps.

Guarding +

Peristalsis +

INVESTIGATIONS:

Barium Enema of 11 / 12 / 85 was suggestive of Redundant sigmoid colon.

DIAGNOSIS: Chronic constipation due to Redundant sigmoid colon.

The child was advised surgery by the Orthodox School. Could we as homoeopathic physicians do some thing?

Well, the treatment commenced with a single dose of Ambra grisea 30 and sac lac pills there times a day. The child was all right for two days. Ambra Grisea 30 was repeated and the problem resolved again. Since the child was going back to Singapore, I gave him both Ambra Grisea 30 & Sac Lac pills, asking the parents to give Ambra Grisea only if improvement stopped. They were asked to report after one month. A month later, I received a letter stating that the problems continued as earlier. He passed the stool only while Ambra Grisea was given.

This time I also received the history that his food was being prepared in aluminum vessels. I sent word asking the parents to stop cooking in aluminium vessels and a few doses of Alumina 30. Alumina 30 was a wrong hasty prescription. The very next day I received an urgent call saying that the child was very bad, vomiting and having severe tenesmus. Alumina 30 was stopped forthwith & an enema was given to relieve the child.

It was then I decided to give what was upper most in my mind, and which if you go through the case carefully is the only remedy indicated in this case. Syphilinum 1M, 1 dose was given on 23.5.86 and a week later 1 more dose repeated. The childs problem resolved as if a magic wand had been passed over him. He passed stools freely, though only after 4 days. Besides that his shyness also diminished. Till today he remains free of his problem which plagued him from infancy.

I want to share with you some cases and the joy of discovering a common remedial thread running through them, indicating an old remedy in a new light. That thrill of reconfirmation of the philosophy and the science of homoeopathy for the umpteenth time, still fascinates.

CASE 1 :

Mrs. J M, aged 30, a mother of 2 kids, 12 and 6 years, came with constipation and bleeding fissures; hemorrhage and pain in rectum, worse during stool and travelling. All this had started since her first pregnancy.

Although living in an extremely orthodox joint family, in a small town in the south, she was determined to finish her BA. She was married at the age of 17, was very tense and unable to take a decision, whenever her husband was out of town. Cervical spondylitis since 4 years. Pain in the right side, radiating to the breast; unable to raise hand freely. Extremities cold with clammy sweat, love to wear heavy silk sarees with large gold borders. Inexplicable minor tremors always present all over.

A single dose turned this shy, puny housewife around within six months. She gained some weight, hardly constipated, no bleeding or trembling. She even passed her BA examinations.

CASE 2 :

PP, a boy aged 15, 5 feet 4 inches in height, the only child of middle class parents, came with painful cracks in the heels, and cracked toe nails. He also had frequent attacks of colds. Ever since he had come to Madras 2 years ago, he had not been faring well at school. He had headaches regularly. He was very scared of his father. Loved ice cold water, cold baths, action films and hot spicy food. Sweats (2+). Constipated. Very dry and rough skin of the legs.

In the new school, the teacher rebuked him in front of the whole class; subsequently he was very scared of teachers. The skin problem began a little after that. He is very shy, easily frightened, very careful about answering questions and never cries in the presence of his parents. Headache comes on whenever sad, especially on getting low marks. Tense before exams even though well prepared. According to his mother, the patient does not mix with strangers and has only one friend whom he visits often. He is allergic to sulpha drugs. Since 6 months, he has occasional trembling all over the body which lasts a few seconds. Never goeson a giant wheels or merry-go rounds and hardly smiles. Maternal grandfather had diabetes.

Treatment and Follow -up : The remedy, one dose, was given in 10 M potency.

16th March 92 : Did well in exams, constipation better, cracks in heel better, no pain. Trembling still present but feels mentally more confident. SL given.

21st May 1992 : Cracks returned. Skin also thick in heel area. Pain returned. 10 M, second dose.

12th June 92 : Patient relaxed and smiling. Goes to school confidently. Cracks better. No constipation. Given SL.

8th July 92 : Very anxious about fathers transfer due in a couple of months. Dandruff present. Nails still cracked, skin still rough and dry. Skin around the knee and lower leg becomes blue when apprehensive. Body gives a foul odour.

A / f Anticipation (SR Vol I Pg 15). Arg-nit 1 M -one dose.

23rd July 92 : makes more friends now. Not so scared of teachers. Cracks of the left foot better while that of the right foot still present. Given SL.

28th July 92 : cracks came but went by itself. Nails dry and yellow with white areas around the toes. Cheerful and relaxed. Given Sulphur to complete the healing.

5th Oct 92: Mother reported that the patient was happy at his fathers transfer and has joined a new school. No more constipation or cracked nails.

CASE 3 : 18th Jan 1993

Mrs M N, a 19 year old daughter of well to do parents, was married last year. She had a H / O wheezing. Very mild wheezing since she was a child, which stopped suddenly when she was 14 years of age. Now, since 3 months, the wheezing has returned. It is worse in damp cold, < oranges,

Last year she passed a lot of long worms in her stools. She usually likes winter but it doesnt suit her. Menarche at 12. Menses 7 / 32, flow normal, wheezing all seven days with pain in abdomen. She has a maternal history of rheumatism and gout.

Her husband is studying in the US. So presently she stays with her parents and attends a nearby city college. She plays the Veena (a musical instrument). According to her cousin, the patient was intelligent and married a boy not as intelligent, but from a rich family. Since then she became an introvert.

Treatment and Follow -up:

The remedy was prescribed in 1 M potency, one dose.

27th Jan 93 : Menses lasted for only 4 days. No wheezing. Bland watery discharge from nose worse early morning.Feels better overall. Prescribed SL.

11th Feb 92 : Menses after 16 days. Flow lasted for 2 days without any pain, discomfort or wheezing. Early morning sneezing present with a dry nose. O / E Nose, throat, chest clear. Kunzli Pg 294 Nose, sneezing with dry nose. Remedy still working. No medicine was prescribed.

13th May 93 : Her cousin reported that the patient was preparing for her exams and had no episode of wheezing, cough or cold. She was fine.

CASE 4 :

Master PK, a 13 year old son of a middle class family, obese and very intelligent, has won gold medals consistently for ranking first since he was in his I class. He has won a number of prizes in Science and Mathematics at the national level. He likes to play cricket and chess. Gets easily injured with hairline fractures. He is very shy and never looks at the listeners eyes while speaking. Wants to be computer engineer. Sweats profusely mainly on the head and upper body. Likes hot bath and cold drinks.

Conscious of being teased about his excess weight. He has recently become fussy about his food. Regular occipital headaches. Very tense before the exams inspite of preparing well. All teachers like him yet he is afraid of them. Very close to mother. While casetaking he sat bent forward and let his mother do all the answering. Various remedies like Cal -c, Sil, Tub, Sulph, arg-n were tried without any results. All the remedies would give temporary relief. The shyness and nervousness continued.

The remedy was given in 10 M potency.

The patient grew taller and also lost weight. He started enjoying games. He now sits straight and answers the questions by himself.

Conclusion :

The common thread-

1) Well Dressed

Women trifle overdressed. Compensatory mechanism for being timid and bashful.

2) Timid, Bashful, Shy, Blush Easily

3) Very Intelligent and Hard Working

4) Anxiety, Fear, Terrified of strangers, crowds

5) Frightened of Authority (spouse, parent, teacher)

Feels unable to meet expectation of person in authority.

6) Ailments from overwhelming new environment

7) Sadness

(Is unable to overcome the situation inspite of being intelligent enough to see it.)

8) Mild anger

Dare not express it due to fear

9) Rectum

Hemorrhoids, constipation

10) Fissures of connective tissues

Skin, gums, heels, anus, hairline fractures

I am sure that by now you have guessed the remedy which has been proved by Dr. Hahnemann and is present in the Materia Medica Pura Vol.I

Yes, the remedy is Ambra-Grisea.

DD- Arg-nit. Inspite of the fears Arg-nit faces the situation while Ambra does not even venture. Baryta-carb. Not so intelligent and seat of problem is throat and growth.

Ambra Grisea has helped me whenever a patient has come with problems, directly related to maladaption to a very pushy, new environment, being very timid, gentle and shy, be it the new bride entering the joint family or the kid joining a new school or somebody joining a new profession.

Is it not one of the wonders of nature that a product of the largest creature present on Earth the Whale, should favour ones so intensely shy?

Sometimes I wonder, if according to Herrings law, one can recognise the Ambra state becoming less prominent when in reply to the question on how he or she enjoyed the party, the patient says that he had a WHALE OF A TIME……

Mr. M S 31 years of age, a mechanic by profession, came to my OPD for the following complaints –

CHIEF COMPLAINTS:

Habits – smoker. 4-6 cigarettes a day since last 10 years.

Sleep – sleeplessness from various thought – related to work.

Sleepy before going to bed but disappears on lying.

Thermally – Hot patient

LIFE SPACE:

The patient stays with his mother, wife, two sisters, a younger brother and his two children. The case taking primarily was done by an intern outside the OPD where the following was elicited –

He studied upto the Eighth standard and start working as a helper in a garage as his family had financial troubles. He is very calm, hard working and is preoccupied all the time with work. Prefers to be alone and dislikes talking and being talked to. His anxiety pertaining to work, is never shared with the family. Likes to be punctual, hates quarrels and is anxious about his health, being the only earning member of the family. He hated music and would switch off the radio as soon as he entered his home.

When I called him, he gave a quick glance at the crowded room and sat looking at the floor. He sat on the examination stool very carefully not allowing his clothes to touch the girls standing around. As I began asking about his day to day activity, his shyness increased. Later he said that “if I had known that there were so many people in the room I would not have entered inside, so please give me the medicine so that I can leave.” (His timidity made me wonder whether he would ever return to us again.)

Every remedy has its own shade of symptoms. In this case the timidity, the preoccupied mind, anxiety about work and his sleeplessness led me to the remedy.

5/3/92 Cough worse. Appetite better SL for 7 days.

12/3/93 Cough better. No giddiness. SL for 7 days.

Appetite improved.

26/3/93 Better. No cough or giddiness SL for one month

Thereafter the patient kept well with no recurrence of cough.

1. SEPIA IN FROZEN SHOULDER

A 51 years old lady came with a left frozen shoulder since 6-8 months for which she was taking treatment without result. Movement was very painful and the joint stiff.

Life Situation: The patient has 2 sons who stay abroad. Her husband goes out to work and hence for most of the time she is alone in the house. She cannot bear contradiction and used to lose her temper quickly.

She likes spicy food and has aversion to milk and cheese.

Thermal modality : Liked warm drinks, warm climate and was worse in damp weather.

She had aversion for company and was happy when left alone. She had a constant fear that she would be permanently handicapped and she had spent a lot of money for treatment as a result.

Menstrual History : Menses – late, scanty, every 11/2 to 2 months. A week before the appearance of menses she would be irritable and tense.

Treatment:

Sepia 200 daily two doses for three days was prescribed.

A week later the pain decreased in intensity.

Sepia 10M two doses 12 hours apart was given after which the stiffness and pain decreases by 50 percent.

Sepia 10M was further repeated twice after every three weeks gap.

She was completely relieved of the ailment and could perform normal household functions with her left hand.

2. CASE OF PSORIASIS AND ARTHRITIS

A 53 years old male patient, senior officer in a private firm came with Psoriasis all over the scalp, face, chest and both hands. He also had arthritis since 8-10 months. (Psoriatic arthritis). Due to the swelling of the joints of upper limbs and stiffness there was difficulty in movement of the fingers.

Nature of eruption: Dry desquamation eruption (at certain places with cracks) over scalp, forehead, ears, upper arms both elbows and certain areas in the chest. There was severe itching and skin was sore to touch.

While taking the history he could not contain himself and broke down weeping. He had undergone a lot of mental tension and worry because of family calamities during previous monsoon.

Treatment: Sepia 200 daily two doses for three days decreased the pain and itching of skin within a weeks time.

Sepia 10M two doses was given 12 hours apart. A fortnight later he was relieved of the swelling as well as the joint pains.

To relieve the joint pains a few doses of Mag-phos 1M were also given as and when necessary.

The skin eruption improved gradually with a decrease in itching.

Sepia 10M was repeated once every three weeks by which time the eruptions had totally cleared off including the swelling of joints all in a period of two months. There has been no recurrence of Psoriasis since then till date.

3. SEPIA IN JAUNDICE

A 16 year old girl came with jaundice (Infective Hepatitis). her main complaints were –

1. Nausea at thought of food. Could not eat anything for 4-5 days as she vomited out everything immediately after eating.

2. Fever which came daily at odd hours and lasted for a few hours with temperature reaching a maximum of 102.5 F.

3. Weakness and exhaustion.

Blood test and other investigation done on 21/12/1989, the day she took up homoeopathic treatment revealed were –

1. Serum Bilirubin Total – 6.40 mgs percent

Serum Bilirubin Direct – 2.00 mgs percent

Serum Bilirubin Indirect – 4.40 mgs percent

2. Test for Australia Antigen – Positive

3. SGPT – 650

4. SGOT -94

5. Routine Urine – Albumin – trace, Bile pigments – +, Bile salts +, Pus cells – 12-15.

Treatment:

Sepia 200 thrice a day after which she improved well. Nausea and vomiting stopped and from the third day there was no fever.

Sepia 200 twice a day was given for 5 days after which it was reduced to once a day for another five days to complete the treatment.

She was advised Syrup Becosule 1 tsp thrice a day.

Repeat Investigations:

1. Serum Bilirubin Total – 1.24

Serum Bilirubin Direct – 0.90 mgs percent

Serum Bilirubin Direct – 0.34 mgs percent

4. Urine report – normal.

AMBRA – grisea IN ASTHMATIC BRONCHITIS

A 78 year old male came with chronic asthmatic bronchitis and palpitation on least exertion. He also had a nervous breakdown and was bedridden since several months.

Orthodox treatment failed to give any relief as a result of which he came for homoeopathic treatment.

Initially Antim-tart, Ipecac and Senega were tried without any benefit. In one of the visits to the patient the case was reviewed and detailed information about the behavioral pattern ascertained.

The patient used to be a lover of classical music – but recently he did not allow even a cassette to be played in the house as he did not want to hear music which made him sad and weep.

He never wanted to meet any outsider and wanted that he be left alone. He felt jittery in the presence of outsiders and all his complaints aggravated. The spasmodic choking cough was at its worst in the presence of strangers.

He used to become breathless for long periods after each paroxysm of cough.

Treatment:

Considering the above he was given Ambra-grisea 200 thrice a day for three days.

The cough was relieved 75 percent within three days and the palpitation on exertion reduced.

Ambra-g 200 was given twice daily for 4 days by which time the patient had no cough or breathlessness.

Ambra-g 200 was repeated once every week for 4 weeks which eventually changed his entire personality. There was no recurrence of the cough either.

5. ASTACUS – FULVIATILIS IN URTICARIA AND ITCHING OF JAUNDICE

During the course of treatment of jaundice at times, intolerable itching of the whole body is a major problem.

The use of Ast-flu 30 in frequent doses has helped in tackling the above complaint when Hepar-sul and other drugs have failed to mitigate the suffering.

The drug has also given marvellous results in cases of Urticaria with stomach upsets and liver enlargement.

6. OLEUM-JECORIS

The drug has been found very helpful in the treatment of rickety children with scrofulous diathesis. Emaciation of limbs, almost always presenting severe throat problems and hacking cough.

Besides giving the drug in low potency internally often it has been noticed that these rickety children improve remarkably when they are given – Bacillinum 1M one or two doses at long intervals and advise Cod Liver oil bath once a week. (applying, rubbing the oil all over the body and wash with warm water after one hour). This helps absorption of the medicinal effect of the oil by the skin.

One afternoon, while I was resting at home, a 65-70 year old man knocked at the door. He was slim, fair, not quite clean shaven. Clothes were clean and simple. He had an awkward expression and an embarrassed smile on his face. I was reluctant to take him in, as it was an odd time and he did not look as though he would pay me for the consultation.

He understood my expression and said that he wanted to take Homoeopathic medicines from me and entered inside (as if pushing me aside).

I got interested in him due to his behavior and I called him for consultation.

Whenever I sleep in the afternoon I see various faces of unknown people in front of my eyes and I feel disturbed. Otherwise there is nothing that I suffer from – no cold, no cough, no fever. Nothing, nothing at all” he said.

“What do you do?” I asked him. “Now I am retired. Earlier I used to work in a small private company. Initially, I was working with a good firm but my friend cheated me. He advised me to take the second job for better prospects and I did as told. Later he joined the same company which I had left on his advice. That company was doing well but mine was small and so was my salary. There is no headache, no backache, no chest pain, nothing at all” he told me with an awkward smile.

“If you thought that you have been cheated then why did you not change the job?” I asked him.

“No, I did not feel much bad. I just carried on with the same job. There is no cough, no asthma, nothing, nothing is there – he said with the same smile.

“Can you tell me about your childhood?” I asked him.

“My father had a business in Ratnagiri. We were very rich. Once the ship which carried our goods was wrecked and we became bankrupt. After that we could never do any business. I did matriculation and came to Bombay for work. I see only faces when I sleep in the after noon. It is quite disturbing. Otherwise nothing is there. No headache, no giddiness, no blood pressure, nothing, nothing is there.” Throughout the conversation there was an awkward, embarrassed smile on his face.

I gave him Ambra-grisea 1M one dose and sac lac.

I have not brought you money but I shall pay you later” – he said.

“Please dont worry about the money. You take the medicine and get well. Please come after one week. You will have to take the medicine for a few days” – I told him. I knew that he was never going to pay me, but his case was very interesting to treat.

He did not come for the follow-up. Two weeks later, I happened to see him on the road. I asked him about his health to which he initially reacted as if he did not know me. But then, he told me that he had not been benefited at all. He also told me that he shall see me later and pay my dues.

I told him not to pay me but give me one more chance to cure him and took him home with me. This time I gave him a dose of Ambra- grisea 10M with SL and requested him to inform me after a weeks time. I told him that I was interested in his case and I was very sure about the medicine.

Three weeks later, he came and reported that now he has stopped seeing faces during the afternoon and he gets undisturbed sleep.

It is interesting to note that Ambra-grisea has a symptom – Ailments from business failure. In his childhood history, he had told that there was a sudden failure in family business which had made them very poor.

Having presented a study of Ambergris two years ago (published in THE HOMOEOPATHIC RECORDER, Vol. XXXVII, page 246), it may be interesting to recount some of the effects obtained by the use of this excellent remedy. The results in each case, unless otherwise noted, were prompt and effective; that they were produced by the remedy was evidenced by the order of disappearance or modification of the symptoms-a sufficient hint to the initiated-others, please investigate.

A high school girl who had taken her Latin and mathematics too seriously was “all to pieces,” so her mother said. She disliked the studies she formerly had liked; felt as if she could not make an effort, as if in a dream; she was also physically indolent, appeared and felt weak. Nervous, fidgety, aggravated by noises. Late getting asleep. Anorexia, except for supper; thirst. General aggravation morning and evening. Amelioration in the open air.

Ambra 1m. enabled her to continue he studies without further interruption.

II.

A woman who had aborted, was referred to me by a naturopath after two weeks of flowing. The hemorrhage was dark, clotted, gushing.

Pain all over, especially in the abdomen, back and lower extremities, necessitating frequent changes of position.

Thirst; sweetish taste; nausea.

Chills, fever, rapid pulse.

Pyrogen 6m. first day improved, but on the fourth day after another remedy was imperatively needed.

The remedy syndrome then presented was:

Burning in the epigastrium.

Intermittent metrorrhagia.

Weakness; trembling on rising, with dizziness and pressure in the occiput.

Lips and tongue bluish.

Troublesome dreams, e.g., of running like an auto all round, up high and down.

The hemorrhages alternating with white discharge-white as milk.

Ambra 40m., one dose, produced immediate and final effect.

III.

Middle-aged man, who had had in previous years, heavy dosage of quinine. The quinine had been repeated through many years, whenever the “aches” appeared.

The urgent demand at present was for the relief of a severe pain in the vertex, which compelled him to cease work. These attacks would continue for days or even weeks at a time. He was subject to arteriosclerosis, of course.

Coldness at night, needing excessive clothing. Forgetful, nervous, trembling. All excitement sensed in the heart, easily excited and hypersensitive.

Palpitation from every excitement.

Ambra 1m. proved effective. Then Ferrum-and he felt so well that he did not return for another remedy for the next sixteen months.

IV.

Young lady, who always kept herself clothed with a multiplicity of symptoms. When “flu” time came she had to be held in bed as she was so actively delirious. One dose of Cuprum and one visit were all that was necessary that time. Previously, Pulsatilla and Sulphur had produced fundamental improvement. This time her symptom complex was essentially as follows:

Dreaming “all night,” seeing things after waking, windows full of people, strange lights, starts at the visions because of fright.

Forgetful, despondent, worried about herself.

Hurry; could not concentrate; cannot work fast enough.

Bilious attacks.

Pressure in chest and head in the morning.

Dysmenorrhoea.

Ambra 2m. acted well; more than a year elapsed before another prescription was applied for.

V.

Old lady with chronic nephritis.

Oedema of face and legs; scanty urine; late getting asleep or waking early.

Much troubled with dizziness, aggravated by standing or by gazing at any certain object.

Psorinum, was her radical remedy, but Ambra is the great remedy for senile dizziness. The 1m. gave her great relief, even removing the oedema for a time.

VI.

J.C., age seventy-two. Much troubled for several years with nausea, which was aggravated by motion and by thinking of it.

Chronic dry cough, from tickling in the throat.

Sleepless till I A.M.

Headache over eyes.

Thirst some days, averse to drink other days.

Feels well some days and other days as if “doped”.

His symptoms and sensations were always irregular.

Ambra 1m. Felt so well he did not return till five months later.

Remedy repeated. Gained color and weight and felt fine.

VII.

Lady with ear disease. Specialists said the tympanum was hardening and contracting.

Mentally she was well-poised, but unstable nervously, i.e., easily exhausted from any slight, unusual burden.

Tinnitus aggravated by hearing people talk; sounds seem far off.

Intense dizziness, sometimes thrown to the floor; dizziness in waves, had to continue lying three or four days.

Nervous: trifling incidents irritate; fidgety; aggravated by people talking.

Anorexia in the morning ( a frequent clinical observation). Faint stomach in the forenoon. Always better and stronger during pregnancies.

Ambra 1m. followed by good improvement of three weeks duration; then a similar set of symptoms. Sick headache; dizziness; had to hold to objects while walking, turning or moving.

Straining to vomit, but ineffectually.

Sleepless; hearing never ceasing, twitching, easily awakened.

Is relieved by quiet and without company; desiring change and fresh air; light aggravated.

Good one day, poor the next.

Too hot or too cold.

Ambra 40m., one dose. Improved finely for a year and a half. Phosphorus followed with good effect.

VIII.

Stationary engineer, age fifty-seven.

Attacks of angina; substernal pain like a lump pressing, extending down arms; prostration during the attacks.

Sensation as if food had stuck in the epigastrium.

Is aggravated by remaining quiet, but relieved by lying in bed.

Systolic pressure 130, first sound short, high pitched and rough at inception. Pulse soft and moderately accelerated.

Ambra 1m. one dose and 2m. one dose, two weeks later, was given with great relief. Lycopodium 10m. and Digitalis 1m., one dose of each, was followed by a years comfort and efficiency. Six months ago another prescription of Lycopodium was given. Ambra was the remedy for the angina. No attacks have occurred since.

IX.

Ambra palliated a case of inveterate high tension, with frequent attacks of convulsive quivering.

Weakness aggravated by the least physical exertion; confined to bed most of the time; the lower extremities almost give way when up.

Worse before breakfast.

Right arm always aching as if tired.

Rush of blood to head when looking upward.

Quivering spells; sensation of internal convulsion, aggravated by lying on either side.

These spells cause much anxiety.

After these spells a copious flow of urine.

Head “whirling, but not dizzy”.

Ambra 1m. gave much relief and systolic pressure was reduced twenty-five points. The 40m., given a month later, helped in a similar way and during the past year the old lady has continued to improve with other remedies.

X. A.S., age sixty years, had been overheated a few days previous. Constant fullness and pressure in head. Dizziness. Confused sensation. Systolic pressure, 200.

Ambra 1m. one dose. Six weeks later reported quick relief. Systolic pressure dropped to 170. But he complained of a constant full sensation, that could not be located. Bovista 300th now acted well.

XI.

Mrs. S. had spells of indescribable distress in the abdomen, after retiring in the evening. Copious belching, followed by chill: crawling sensation in the occiput, always followed the spells.

She had other nervous spells; hands shaking, dizziness, as if she had been long in a boat.

Desire to yell; to hit someone; felt as if going crazy.

Nerve tension; feeling entire body rigid then relaxed (lyc.).

Foggy vision.

Ambra 1m. and 40m. appeared to do well for three months, then this remedy was supplanted by Lycopodium.

XII.

Woman with old congestion of liver.

Dizzy every little while with swimming sensation, reeling and nausea; compelled to lie down frequently.

Weak sensation and fluttering in stomach.

Ambra 1m. and 40m., at intervals, palliated for six months.

XIII.

Mrs. N., age thirty five, had a sick headache weekly which became less intense as the following attacks appeared. Had had suppurative otitis when a child.

Dizzy spells; many slight ones and others more severe, apparently of epileptic character; sensed mostly in the occiput, worse when lying, worse opening the eyelids; accompanied by a smothering sensation and pressure on the chest as from an external weight, with general perspiration, aggravated by the presence of other people.

Slow pulse.

Followed by drowsiness and weakness.

Trembling spells, aggravated by a little excitement or without apparent cause. Face flushed and hot during spells. Memory impaired; easily confused. Exhausted in the morning.

Ambra 1m. improved so much that I saw her no more after a few weeks.

XIV.

After an old lady with arthritis of the deformans type had responded to Mag. phos. for two years, the remedy appeared to have been exhausted.

She complained of single aches in various places as in the teeth, a foot or the vertex.

Dizzy spells while walking. When dizzy has a longing for sleep.

Sensitive to both and heat (formerly only to cold).

Ambra 40m. caused her to feel se well that she did not report again until nine months later, when the cm. produced a similar good effect.

XV.

Mrs. H., patient not known to me personally. Said to be a nervous subject.

Could not urinate readily when bladder become too full, because she was “too nervous” Had to wait for relaxation, aggravated if any person was stirring about nearby.

Dizziness.

Numbness of hands while lying at night or if fingers are flexed for any length of time.

Sharp pains darting all through her.

Flush of heat after rising to urinate at 4-5 A.M. Ambra 1m. relieved at once. Requested same medicine six weeks later, after having been “strung up” because of domestic affairs.

XVI.

Boy who had been exposed to pertussis while a severe cough had been going a week. Worst spells in the late evening, aggravated by physical activity and indoors.

The spells were exhausting.

White, stringy phlegm, difficult to remove. Soon after one dose of Ambra 1m. the cough disappeared, but returned three weeks after the first prescription. Also presented a peculiar papulomacular rash on the body. A repetition of the 1m. cut short further symptoms.

XVII.

Little girl with whooping cough, aggravated in the evening and by lying, ameliorated in the open air. Choking when getting out phlegm. Irritable: orange-colored mucus in stools.

Mag. phos. 9c. relieved nicely, but for ten days only. Then had hard spells at night and spells during sleep, better hot applications to chest, hard tight-sounding.

Frequent voiding of urine in great quantities; often ineffectual urging.

Ambra 1m. improved nicely a few days, then was aggravated after having wet feet. A dose of the 40m. then completed the cure within a week.

XVIII.

A young lady was chilled on a long ride while menstruating. Menses had been suppressed, but appeared as usual at the next period, except for a tendency to stop and start.

What troubled the lady most, however, was swelling of the lips, which appeared as the menstruation was checked. At one time one-half the lips would be swollen, at another time the other side. At times all swelling would be gone. At other time the entire lips would be swollen. Of course such a phenomenon in a young ladys lips was a condition which very properly called for an attitude of distress, especially as she could never tell when the lips were going to be swollen, or which side was to become distorted next. The only thing upon which she could depend was that both lips would be equally swollen, either on one side or the other, in the morning.

After a few weeks, notwithstanding the use of epsom salts and other laxatives and appropriate moral persuasion by her physician, the lips continued to be swollen all the time. In addition, itching began and white wheals appeared transiently in various places. The lady then lost her appetite and temper and became quite tired. “The homoeopath” was called in and Ambra 1m. was prescribed. It cured overnight.

XIX

Lady losing sleep, since worrying about a slight illness of her husband.

Headache and head hot, worse after sleeping.

When attempting to sleep, saw herself doing things and other visions. Sleepiness in the evening, but sleepless after retiring.

Flushed face and brilliant eyes while relating symptoms. Symptoms worse when thinking of them.

Ambra 1m. and 40m., two months apart, greatly increased her stock of endurance, besides erasing the other symptoms.

XX.

Old lady disturbed every night with cramps in thighs, calves, feet and occasionally in the neck.

Dizzy spells.

Ambra 1m. cured ( A year previous Cicuta vir. had cured a serious attack of stiff neck, accompanied with spasms extending to the throat and chest.).

XXI

Ambra was needed in the course of treatment of a chronic coryza.

Nasal stoppage worse from any excitement, heat, draft or smoke, be sneezing.

Cold air stinging the membranes.

When coughing sensation as though something hit the bladder, with consequent loss of urine.

Ambra improved for a month until the patient was caught in the grippe epidemic.

XXII

A man of sixty-three fell twenty-five feet, landing on his left shoulder. No serious immediate effects, but had not felt well for several months after. He is a man on whom incidents long past are continued as vivid reality and these symptoms persisted.

Coldness; impossible to keep warm.

An indefinite pain in the right abdomen, with an internal cold sensation.

Urinary urging imperative.

Cough, gagging and vomiting of breakfast.

Aggravated before a storm.

Indolence.

Ambra 1m. cured. Then he strained the right side of the abdomen. Return of internal coldness.

Nervous and worried. Repetition of the 1m. cured.

XXIII.

Woman tired out with the care of a large family.

Numbness for two months, worse in the hands, but also goes to head and entire body; aggravated after inaction, picking up things, standing. Drops things. Hands feel paralyzed when sitting.

Weakness, worse hurrying, worse if many people are about, from any confusion or activity.

Dizziness when moving, relieved by lying.

Slow steady reaction from Ambra 1m. with splendid ultimate result.

XXIV.

A woman had been subject for many years to copious menstruation and metrorrhagia of all degrees and at all seasons. She was of the stout, florid type which has low arterial tension. Trillium and Pulsatilla had done most good, but temporarily only. a late marriage was contracted. The condition became so bad that she was confined to bed much of the time.

Ambra 1m. was given. She continued flowing hard for a week, then it suddenly ceased and has been normal the last four months, the longest period in fifteen years.

Sept. 15. Spasms of the mitral valve.

Fainting-spells 4 or 5 times a day, without loss of consciousness but with weakness: rather spells of sudden weakness.

Face flushed when studies after eating.

Thoughts vanishing.

Forgets of what he was thinking when figuring: a blank appears.

Perspiration when reciting, forgets what he was to recite, though he knew it before.

Sensitive to heat and warm weather.

Wants windows open.

Better in motion than in rest.

Sadness intense.

Irritable – weeping paroxysms.

1913. From a sickly child and weakly young man, he has developed perfect health with more than ordinary physical strength.

The general condition and the local symptoms and functional derangements must yield to the power of the properly selected remedy. The characteristics of the patient indicate the remedy; it requires only a trained prescriber to find it and keep to it.

Case 2

Mrs. J. L. H., 38 years of age.

1910.

June 23. Very nervous, trembling.

Had boils when young and carbuncles more recently.

Heart trouble for several years, for which she has had allopathic and osteopathic treatment without improvement.

“Hypertrophied.”

Mitral murmur;

Pulse rapid.

Palpitation lying on left side; sleeps on back and right side.

Cyanotic when born.

Thirst for cold water.

Generally better in summer than in winter.

Ankles swollen some.

Phos. 10m. F. C.

July 6. A violent aggravation followed.

Aug. 8. Gaining rapidly; no nervous trembling; can sleep on left side; feeling quite well; no symptoms past two weeks.

Oct. 1. Was kept on Phos., receiving 10m F. C., August 31. Chief heart symptoms have decreased or disappeared.

Nervousness prominent: weeps when telling her symptoms; tired constantly; wakeful from active thinking; conversation tires her; noise excites her; trembling hands; easily worried.

Swelling of face, lips and ankles at times.

Prolapsus with dragging sensation in uterus.

Ambr. 10m. F. C. was given on the basis of the character of nervousness and sensitiveness to company in connection with the other features, after the heart symptoms were dispelled.

Ambr. 10m repeated Oct. 1 and 28.

Ambr. 50m. Dec. 1.

During this period the record includes –

Abdomen distention more or less.

Desire for cold drinks.

Headache after mens. period.

Heart – burning sensation in that region;

Palpitation worse lying on left side.

Respiration difficult in a crowd.

Tonsillitis in Nov.; subject to it; during that period –

Heart pulsations rapid, with dyspnoea and protruding eyes.

Hurried sensation.

Subject to cold-sores.

1911.

Feb. 9. Had appendicitis after Dec. 1, carried to recovery with Phos. followed by Arsen. Her would-be friends did what they could to persuade her husband to have operative measures used, but without avail.

When the dragging sensation as of prolapsed uterus was most troublesome the would-be friends urged having the uterus fastened to the abdominal wall, but Homoeopathy held the case.

Mar. 8 to Oct. 9 the symptoms of the patient in her usual disorders were not satisfactorily nor completely reported so that not much progress in the chronic condition was evident.

Febr. 15 to Oct. 9 pain in the appendix recurred twice, temp. 102, each time promptly dispelled by Phos. which was given in 50m, cm, dm and mm potencies, twice in succession in each potency, each time holding for four or five weeks.

Dec., 1911, to Feb., 1912, Phos. 1m was used three times, each time followed by improvement as revealed in mental condition and general strength. Each time her medicine was needed the aggravation from noise, crowds and confusion, the restlessness and craving for air returned, though the menstrual periods became more comfortable and regular, and some progress could be detected.

1912.

Mar. 30. Aggravation from noise is found throughout the record.

Made her irritable;

Averse to company; wants to be quiet;

Made her lose consciousness for a few minutes;

Worse from people’s talking;

Rustling of paper or escaping steam annoys;

Cannot stand confusion nor crowds;

Sudden noise makes her sink, lips become white, frigid and swollen;

Makes her feel faint, the dog’s barking, beating of rugs, piano (for awhile appeared better from music but later the noise of it aggravated her intensely, violent “nervous spells” occurring).

During these few months needed much space, much air, and had –

Functional heart symptoms or “nervous spells” especially when things did not pass smoothly, harmoniously.

Coldness, numbness, with slow heartpulse; sudden dizziness; weakness; pale or bluish face and fingernails; circulation poor; sensation as if would faint; heavy ache about the heart followed by exhaustion and weak pulse.

Despondent, especially when waking in morning.

Aversion to being touched.

“Bloating:” abdomen, ankles, face.

The association of heart symptoms and intense aggravation to noise lead to the prescription of –

Aurum 1m Shedd-Smith. Repeated May 6, in 1m and June 6, in 10m potencies.

The changes in her condition during these three months are different from all the preceding:

Color, circulation, sleep, strength – all improved;

“Bloating” steadily decreasing;

Thirstless;

Menstrual period progressively improved;

Aggravation from noise less constant.

Felt so good that she overexerted, visiting with friends and having a general good time, following which symptoms were temporarily worse.

In the course of this record other remedies were given without evidence of any action. Phos. removed the physical diagnostic symptoms. The functional symptoms have yielded to Aurum.

Aur. 10m, 50m, cm, dm – two doses of each, have been used in succession, as her physical tone was reduced. Each prescription held usually four or five weeks.

April, 1913, she was strong, robust, having been entirely free from cardiac disturbance since the summer of 1912.

The only symptoms have been extreme sensitiveness to noise, excitement, and confusion which Aurum has always relieved immediately.
