স্নায়ুতন্ত্র (Nervous System):
সংজ্ঞা: দেহের বিভিন্ন স্নায়ু, মস্তিষ্ক ও সুষুন্মা কাণ্ড এবং তাদেও কার্যক্রম অর্থাৎ এ সমস্ত অঙ্গ একত্রিত ভাবে আমাদের শরীরে বিভিন্ন কার্যকলাপ যেভাবে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে তাদেরকে একত্রে স্নায়ুতন্ত্র বলে ।
স্নায়ুতন্ত্রের শ্রেণী বিভাগ (Classification):
কেন্দ্রীয় (Central) :
- ১) মস্তিষ্ক (Brain),
- ২) সুষুন্মা কাণ্ড (Spinal Cord)
প্রান্তীয় (Peripheral):
- ১) দৈহিক (Somatic),
- ২) স্বতক্রিয় (Autonomic)
স্নায়ুতন্ত্রের প্রয়োজনীয়তা:
- ১) এটি সর্ব প্রথম পদ্ধতি যা শরীরের কার্যক্রম নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে।
- ২) এ নিয়ন্ত্রণ প্রক্রিয়া অত্যন্ত দ্রুত।
- ৩) এর অন্তঃক্ষরা বা এন্ডোক্রাইন গ্রন্থির উপর নিয়ন্ত্রণ আছে।
- ৫) পরিবেশের সাথে শরীরকে দ্রুত খাপ খাওয়াতে সাহায্য করে।

স্নায়ু (Nerve):
স্নায়ু কোষ বা নিউরনের সবচেয়ে লম্বা তন্ত্র বা এক্রান যা উদ্দীপনা বহন করে। একাধিক এক্রানের সমন্বয়ে একটি স্নায়ু গঠিত।
স্নায়ু প্রধানত ২ ধরনের । যথা :
- ক) গতি জনক বা মোটর (Motor),
- খ) অনুভূতি বাহক বা সেনসরি (Sensory)
মোটর (Motor) :
যে সমস্ত স্নায়ু মস্তিষ্ক বা সুষুন্মা কাণ্ড থেকে উদ্দীপনা বহন করে মাংসপেশি ও গ্রন্থিতে নিয়ে আসে এবং যথাক্রমে এদের সংকোচন ও নিঃসরণ করে তাদের কে মোটর স্নায়ু বলে।
অনুভূতি বাহক বা সেনসরি (Sensory) :
যে সমস্ত স্নায়ু ত্বক বা অন্যান্য অঙ্গ থেকে উদ্দীপনা বহন করে মস্তিষ্ক বা সুষুন্মা স্নায়ুতে পৌঁছে দেয় তাকে সেনসরি স্নায়ু বলে।
স্নায়ু সংযোগ বা সিনেপ্স (Synapse):
দুইটি স্নায়ু যে স্থানে মিলিত হয় এবং এক স্নায়ু থেকে অন্য স্নায়ু তে পৌঁছে দেয় তাকে সিনেপ্স বলে।
