She said, “Oh, mother, I feel so strangely, I think I have the cramp”. Cham. relieved, but there remained great vertigo and nausea; she complained of being very cold, but did not shudder; great weakness, as after long illness, with headache lasting all afternoon.

About 3 1/2 and 4 o’clock, P.M., sitting in church, she was seized with a sharp, steady pain in the stomach, accompanied by the most deathlike faintness she ever recollected to have felt, with extreme sickness and immediate loss of strength.

A cold sweat covered her; she thinks she must have been deathly pale, for she felt as though the blood (which had at first been driven to the head by the suddenness and severity of the pain), were leaving it and the extremities altogether; they were quite cold; her sight grew dim, and she became so faint that she expected every moment to fall from her seat.

The pain in the stomach felt as though it would draw her double.

Having no friend near her she feared to make the attempt to leave the pew, lest she should not have strength to reach the door unaided, much less her home.

The attack lasted, she thinks, about half an hour, after which the violence of the pain gradually abated, the faintness passed off, the chilliness gave place to heat, and the blood rushed to her head with such a face, that she could hardly hold it up, or keep her eyes open, though quite conscious of the services going on about her.

After services she was able to walk slowly home, though very weak feeling very much as if she had been ill for a month.

She felt the weakness especially in her back although she had no pain there, but during the rest of the evening, whenever drawing a long breath it appeared to come from a spot on each side of the spine, about the middle of the back, come from a spot on each side of the spine, about the middle of the back, on a line with the inferior angles of the scapulae (fifth day).

In the morning, after the fourth dose, very soon tired; warm ebullitions like spasms spread over the whole trunk, particularly in the back; no pains, but a trembling of the muscles; towards two o’clock the pains in the chest return; feels better when walking.

Flushes of heat to the head after attack.

Warm creeps run over the abdomen.

Cold sweat; breaks out over the whole body; covers her, with cramps in stomach.

Chill; metallic taste, slight nausea, palpitation; pain striking from the heart across to the lower extremity of the right lung; a sensation as of cold water poured down the back, and numbing coldness of the feet, though covered warmly in bed (returned repeatedly after taking the 12th); in the last attack the chill was general; I was not sensible of any particular coldness of the extremities, though, indeed, nearly all sensation was lost for a time in the deathlike faintness.

A CASE STUDY

Dr. M.S. Hakimji L.C.E.H.

CASE:

Master Murtuza aged 3 years, a Muslim child residing in Singapore was brought to me on 27.2.86, C / o. Chronic constipation since infancy. The child was given a lot of allopathic purgatives since infancy for his ailment. At present he could pass his stools only after an enema. The stools were hard, dry, offensive, occasionally in form of round balls. Mucus was absent. The Child had to strain a lot during defaecation. The child preferred to pass stools, standing. Child also occasionally complained of epigastric pain and vomiting. He did not like anyone around while passing stools.

He was slim & tall for his age. A poor eater he had a strong dislike for solid foods and fruits. He liked cold drinks, aerated waters, lemons, pungent things, soups and salt. His thirst was as less as his appetite. A hot child, he was uncomfortable in the sun and preferred a cold bath.

The child was born Caesarean and breast fed till 6 mths. Supplementary feeds were started from 6 months onwards. The child disliked the bottle and had to be spoon-fed. The childs milestones were normal.

A playful, quiet and intelligent child, he was extremely apprehensive of being examined. That I presumed was due to the fact that the child had been seen by various doctors before being brought to me. According to the mother, the child used to get frightened easily. He was a light sleeper awakening every two hours before going back to sleep. There was no past history of any major illness.

Family history revealed that the mother had suffered from 2 miscarriages prior to the birth of the patient and had hypertension and urinary tract infection during her pregnancy. She had also suffered from meningitis and jaundice during her childhood. The paternal grandmother suffered from gout, while the maternal grandmother had hypertension, rheumatic pains and ischaemic heart disease. The maternal grandfather suffered from rheumatoid arthritis.

ON EXAMINATION:

T.R.P. (N)

Tongue: Clean & Moist.

Teeth: Upper incisors cupped.

P / A Soft – full of faecal lumps.

Guarding +

Peristalsis +

INVESTIGATIONS:

Barium Enema of 11 / 12 / 85 was suggestive of Redundant sigmoid colon.

DIAGNOSIS: Chronic constipation due to Redundant sigmoid colon.

The child was advised surgery by the Orthodox School. Could we as homoeopathic physicians do some thing?

Well, the treatment commenced with a single dose of Ambra grisea 30 and sac lac pills there times a day. The child was all right for two days. Ambra Grisea 30 was repeated and the problem resolved again. Since the child was going back to Singapore, I gave him both Ambra Grisea 30 & Sac Lac pills, asking the parents to give Ambra Grisea only if improvement stopped. They were asked to report after one month. A month later, I received a letter stating that the problems continued as earlier. He passed the stool only while Ambra Grisea was given.

This time I also received the history that his food was being prepared in aluminum vessels. I sent word asking the parents to stop cooking in aluminium vessels and a few doses of Alumina 30. Alumina 30 was a wrong hasty prescription. The very next day I received an urgent call saying that the child was very bad, vomiting and having severe tenesmus. Alumina 30 was stopped forthwith & an enema was given to relieve the child.

It was then I decided to give what was upper most in my mind, and which if you go through the case carefully is the only remedy indicated in this case. Syphilinum 1M, 1 dose was given on 23.5.86 and a week later 1 more dose repeated. The childs problem resolved as if a magic wand had been passed over him. He passed stools freely, though only after 4 days. Besides that his shyness also diminished. Till today he remains free of his problem which plagued him from infancy.

CASE REPORTS.

CASE I. Male, age 57, married, 3 children; occupation: garage business; weight 144 lbs. Chief complaints: loss of appetite, chronic indigestion and constipation; duration twelve years. Has tried all sorts of treatment and diets without relief. Becoming increasingly weak and emaciated.

His wife was informed by at least one physician that her husbands trouble was undoubtedly cancer.

Patient was thin and anemic in appearance, bordering on cachexia. Mentally very irritable and brooding much over his condition. Complained of feeling dazed and confused in his mind. Unable to decide matters pertaining to his business. Compelled to lie down and rest several times a day. Unable to be actively engaged in his work and reaching a point where he could no longer give his business adequate supervision. Rumbling, gurgling noises in the abdomen were frequent and annoying. Chronic constipation for many years. Much ineffectual urging, the stool being variable, sometimes hard, sometimes soft, often nodular and lumpy. Dryness of mouth with a metallic taste has been a persistent symptom, also dryness of the skin with annoying itching. A feeling of weakness and uncertainty in the back and legs has been increasingly complained of with easy fatigue on walking.

Phantom tumor of the abdomen has appeared from time to time in various locations probably due to incarcerated flatus.

Pending selection of the remedy suitable dietary correction was instituted but without relief. Study of the case resulted in the selection of Alumina as the indicated remedy. This selection raised a question as to whether the patient needed potentized Alumina or whether he was being poisoned by the metal. Upon inquiry it was discovered that aluminum utensils were used at home in the preparation of food but in order for this to be etiologic significant the patient would have to be allergic to aluminum. As a precautionary measure the discontinuance of the use of such utensils was advised. Fortunately in marking a re- examination a discovery was made that had been overlooked the first time. The patient worse an upper denture the base of which had a bright metallic appearance. Upon inquiry the patient stated that the denture was mounted in aluminum. How long had he worn this plate? Twelve or thirteen years. How long had he been suffering? About twelve years.

Instead of prescribing Alumina the immediate discarding of the aluminum denture was advised. This proved to be the turning point in the case and a rapid and uneventful recovery has resulted. Improvement began in less than two weeks after the aluminum poisoning was stopped. Now after several months everyone says that the patient seems better than he has for years. He no longer suffers from indigestion; the bowels are regular and he is looking after his business every day.

We were doubtless more fortunate than wise in discovering the true etiology of this case. The unusual appearance of the denture had escaped us at a previous examination. This serves to emphasize the importance of a careful physical examination as a routine procedure in every case.

CASE II. The only possible excuse for this case was that it occurred many years ago. A man who had enjoyed shad for dinner complained of a fish bone sticking in the roof of the mouth. Examination with a good light disclosed nothing and the patient was informed that the sensation might persist for a while after the fish bone was gone. In a short time he returned with the same complaint in the same spot on the palate. Again no fish bone was discovered even by means of a digital examination.

Just why he returned the third time will always remain a mystery. He should have been hunting for another doctor. “Its still there, Doc,” he said, “right there”, pointing to a spot on the hard palate. “I can feel it every time I rub my tongue over it”.

Luck was with us for when he mentioned the word tongue it actually did occur to us to examine the tongue and sure enough there was the fish bone as plain as day.

QUESTION AND ANSWER DEPARTMENT.

[ SEnd questions to Dr. Eugene Underhill, Jr. 2010 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Penna].

Question: WHAT IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE REMEDY IN HOMOEOPATHY FOR WEANING AN OPIUM ADDICT? DR. A. S. RAJAH, SINGAPORE.

Answer: Probably the most effective remedy for weaning an opium addict is Nux vom. high, and next, Opium high. Sometimes Ipecac comes in and occasionally Lycopodium, with the emaciation from above downward that so often occurs in these patients.

The most effective remedy is, of course, the most similar, and each individual personality must be taken into consideration, and the reaction of that patient under the narcotic itself. Dr. H.A. ROBERTS, DERBY, CONN.

Question: IS THERE ANY SPECIAL HOMOEOPATHIC TREATMENT FOR OPIUM SMOKERS? DR. A.S. RAJAH, SINGAPORE.

Answer 1: The treatment for opium smokers would naturally be first antidotal and then constitutional-in other words, first the treatment for an acute condition to be followed by the chronic remedy-and the remedy may be the same of different. In the constitutional treatment the above statements would hold as well as for weaning the patient. In the excitable stages have particularly in mind Belladonna and Hyoscyamus, with their clear indications: Lachesis and some of the snake venoms in the more subtle cases, especially Naja with its nervous reactions. In the acute states of wakeful excitement Coffea. In the exceedingly childish states of irritability Chamomilla. In the downright sulky ugliness Nux vom.

Do not think for one minute that these remedies are all that might be indicated, for there are many that may be called for. Opium has a most profound effect on the very character of an addict, affecting as it does the mental, nervous and physical system of the patient. DR. H.A. ROBERTS, DERBY, CONN.

Answer 2: Pulsatilla and Muriatic Acid for the diarrhoea, Chamomilla for nervous states.

After the first remedies Calcarea sulph. and Kali phos. help build up the nervous system. Any of the five may be needed for the condition, depending upon individual symptoms. In my own experience Calcarea sulph. has been my best remedy. DR. A.H.GRIMMER, CHICAGO, ILL.

Alumn

The case reported by Dr. Elliott in November issue is remarkable in many particulars. One of the most remarkable features was the persistence of the Doctor in letting good enough alone. He evidently “knows a thing or two” of the human system and of Homoeopathy. I wish to record a case now under treatment.

Mrs. B., aet. fifty, apparently well for her, of nervous temperament, has had a lifetime of constipation. Her brother-in-law is a prominent allopathic surgeon in Chicago, and has racked his brain and bothered his colleagues not a little to relieve this lady.

The whole list of purgatives have passed through, some singly, with a slow plod, and others in combinations innumerible, have gone with a “hop-step-and-jump,” sweeping everything before them, and not stopping for two or three days afterward, but the old trouble returned; so, for years she did nothing.

The “enemas” or “clysters,” in reality rectal injections, were used on special occasions. It was her habit to go two or three weeks without movement, and of late years she very frequently goes six weeks with no inclination to movement. This interval has been common for several years. Then she empties out in two or three days and dispenses with that function for another such interval.

I have given her an occasional prescription for some new trouble, and perhaps one call would suffice for the time. She has been abroad for months at a time. At my request she called on Dr. Skinner, but twice found him out. She called on a physician in Germany who gave her one powder, with a request to call again “in four weeks,” but she received no effect and did not see him again.

On inquiry she stated that during the interval of bowel suspense the urine was much increased. The stools are not peculiar. About two weeks since I gave her a dose of Alumen 1m (Skinner), but have had no report since.

In Vol. IV, p. 238, of The Clinique, Dr. Bailey has detailed a remarkable case in which Morphia hypodermically seemed to be the only agent used which produced a movement of the bowels. The intervals were: “February 13th to April 28th, unchanged, no movement of the bowels whatever; May 1st to 28th; May 30th to June 17th; June 30th to July 13th.”

He there states that the constipation appeared soon after the disappearance of an abscess in the lower portion of left lung, (probably.)

Phthisis was hereditary.

In Vol. V, p. 449, of same journal, he gave a subsequent report of the case with post-mortem record.

“After an illness of more than five years my patient died, October 31st, 1884, of phthisis pulmonalis. The bowels were inactive, the intervals varying from one to nine weeks.”

Atrophic changes were marked in various organs, “the peritoneum was as thin as tissue paper and glued by adhesions to the intestines. The stomach was divided by constricting peritoneal bands, so as to separate it into two quite distinct compartments of nearly equal size, and as an organ was enlarged and distended. The omentum was firmly adherent, producing a serious knotting together of the entire small intestines. The transverse colon was greatly distended and enlarged, and pouched by constrictions the same as already noted. At the splenic flexure there was a great band, which by encircling the colon had caused an abrupt narrowing of its calibre, as great as the change in diameter of a wrist to that of an index finger, which was literally true in this case. This narrowing of the descending colon was continued until it had reached the signoid flexure; here a congenital malformation was noted, the colon traversing across the lower abdomen, a curve being found at a point just over the ilio-coecal valve, from thence passing downward and backward terminated in an enormous pouch which completely filled the inferior outlet of the pelvis. All shape of the rectum had been lost. The bladder was shrunken to the size of a walnut. The constipation was a result of pathological changes, and in part congenital. The disease was tubercular.”

My patient does not show a tubercular tendency, but may later. I think the above will give us hints in the study of such cases.

In 1899 Mr. E. reported that he had had eczema between the shoulders, for years, temporarily removed, at times, by Sulphur paste. Once had several boils with roughness of the skin in that part. About four years previously he had pain and pressure in the rectum. He supposed that a hemorrhoid had protruded but found it was easily returned within the rectum. About three years after its first appearance, this growth became very large and painful. After an allopath had prescribed lead lotion, and a mongrel homoeopath diagnosed “piles,” and advised their removal, neither advice being followed, Hazeline was employed. The tumor became much worse, with intense pain after stool. Six months previous to the visit, an allopath made an examination, the first that the patient had been given. He discovered, and removed, a polypus with its stem beginning half way up the rectum. He said there was not the slightest chance of a return of the trouble.

Four or five months later, the patient became more constipated; one day he thought he had strained the rectum, during evacuation, after which he used glycerine enemata with benefit. He said he had no faith in Homoeopathy, but one of my patients had advised his consultation, as surgery and allopathy had failed.

I replied that in Homoeopathy works precede faith, and that I was glad that he did not believe, because after he was cured, no one could say it was the effects of faith or of imagination.

1900.

Nov. 11. Rectum-pain in region of internal sphincter, as if strangulated, since August, recently, much worse;

Paroxysms begin 1/2 to 1 hour after stools; sometimes continue all day, and even into the night.

Burning pain about anus.

Shooting pain from anus extending down one-third the inner side or left thigh; not affected by glycerine enemata.

Before polypus was removed, pain aggr. when standing.

Diagnosis of the Remedy: The keynote was the rectal pain extending down the thighs. This belongs only to Alumen (Kent’s Repertory and symptom 192 in Allen’s Encyclopaedia). This remedy has also burning pain in anus, and hard stools.

Constriction during evacuation belongs to the allied remedy, Alumina; but the provings of Alumen are yet incomplete.

Alumen 1m. F. C. One dose.

Dec. 16. Rectal pains improved almost immediately, and in about ten days had almost ceased; entirely absent for past two weeks. Burning around anus absent for past two weeks. Faecal evacuations improved in about ten days; now nearly normal.

1900.

Jan. 30. No more rectal pain. Bowels normal.

He now firmly knows that Hahnemannian Homoeopathy is true. There was no return of rectal trouble to time when last seen, Dec., 1906. He has remained in my care, and sent his family and friends, also, to me. His subsequent history may be of interest.

1899.

Dec. 27. Cough, following cold effects, forces him to kneel on the bed, with head downward.

Eup. perf. cm. F. Cured.

1902.

April 10. Remained in perfect health until re-vaccination with calf-lymph, last November.

Arm very sore for five or six weeks; pustules, very offensive odor.

Influenza about six weeks later, which was easily thrown off.

Hemorrhoids left side rectum, followed influenza;

Pain as if cut open with a knife. Relieved by use of Arsen. 3.

Influenza again, about four weeks ago, followed by re-appearance of Hemorrhoid.

Pain prevents sleep past three nights; Aching extends to 1. natis.

Diagnosis of the remedy: Repertory gives thirty-nine remedies under cutting in rectum. Of these, Silica and Thuja are the chief antidotes to the vaccine virus, and Silica occupies first rank as to the cutting pain.

Silica 6m. F. C. One dose.

May 7. Cutting pain decidedly improved the same day of last report; in two days, it and aching in 1. natis entirely ceased.

1906.

Dec. 3. No return of rectal trouble.

Asthma, past few years, beginning near end of October.

This year, more intense and longer continued.

5 A. M. or earlier (to-day, 3:45 a. m.) wheezing and coughing for an hour.

Cough forces him to sit up and lean forward to r. side. expectoration scant.

Symptoms usually continue for an hour; entirely absent by 10 A. M.

Chest wooden sensation, as if no elasticity.

Soreness 1. side, these two days.

Heart pulsation rapid.

No desire for smoking, past two months.

Irritable when rising at 8 a. m.; disposed to quarrel; amel. after an hour.

Diagnosis of the Remedy: Repertory gives eight remedies for irritability when rising in morning, two remedies for asthma. 4-5 a. m.

Natrum sulph. also belongs to both. Other symptoms were not especially characteristic or were common.

Natrum. sulph. cm. F. One dose.

Dec. 20. Has had influenza for two weeks, but has now thrown it off and is much better.

Asthma was improved, the day after the remedy was taken.

Wheezy from 7 to 8 a. m., yet

Respiration difficult until 9 a. m.

Chest constriction across upper part not entirely disappeared.

Sleep good; does not waken until 6 A. M.

Generally much improved and enjoys his pipe.

Irritability unchanged.

No complaints since.

(1) This case illlustrates the selection of the remedy from the key-notes alone, but this should be done, only when other symptoms of the case are common, or when the remedy has not been completely proved.

(2) Surgical operation accomplished nothing. The only relief was a mechanical one: the pain not then aggr. by standing.

(3) The peculiar cough symptom of Eup. per. I have verified, clinically, in three patients.

(4) The effects of vaccination are suggestive. Boenninghausen considered variola and vaccine both belonging to the Sycotic miasm; for which he places Thuja in the first rank, and Silica its second, but Silica occupies first rank in the cutting pain. Hence its selection.

(5) The effects of “mark of the beast” appears to have continued longer, for Natrum sulph., which relieved the asthma, is also sycotic. Perhaps Silica expended its energy chiefly on the evident Psoric taint.
